Sticky throttle

More than likely, you either have a broken throttle return spring, or some type of obstruction that is not allowing the throttle cable to return to it's normal position. If this only happens when it is cold and upon determining that it is otherwise safe and intact, I would pull the cable and using a cleaner/solvent, spray the cable and actuate it until it is free. Re-lubricate with a light weight oil and reassemble. If there is any indication of a frayed end or kinked cable, dispose of the old one and purchase a new one as this is a critical safety item. Good Luck.

1995 camaro- the gas pedal is hard to depress when starting from a stop. i believe the problem is the accelerator cable but not sure

Hi

1) If the gas pedal is hard to compress you could have a broken spring inside the throttle housing. The throttle housing is located in the sealed compartment of the cruise control housing.(The housing with the rubber bladder.) You will have to remove the rubber covering to inspect the inner workings of the throttle mechanism. If every thing looks intact push on the accelerator. If it is still hard to push in, you could have a rusty cable.

2) A simple can of WD-40 should be applied lightly to the inner workings of the housing parts.
Try the throttle again and if it is still hard to push, check the connections of the cables to the throttle apparatus. Use the long plastic tube on the spray nozzle of your WD-40 can to shoot lubricant in to the small openings of the cable sleeve.

3) It may take a few minutes of manipulating the throttle to loosen up the corroded cable connections. Once the cable slides and the throttle seems to move freely take a dab of Vaseline and coat the ends of the cable connections. Vaseline will keep the moving parts lubricated and protect the connections from becoming more corroded.

4) By lubricating all moving linkages, you can prevent further throttle sticking. Make sure you replace all coverings back to the way they were when you started. Sit in the drivers seat and push the throttle pedal a few times to ensure that the throttle is no longer sticking.

5) Take your car out for a short spin in a unpopulated area such as a empty parking lot. Start and stop the vehicle numerous times to check it out. If the gas sticks at a slow operating speed, you can simply put the car in to neutral, apply the brakes and switch the ignition off. It is always better to be safe ..

However for an easy solution check cable to throttle body, it may be kinked. This is a common problem. Remove the throttle body and clean the throttle plate with a throttle body cleaner. Clean the front and back of the plate. Just spray and wipe off with a rag. Do not scrub with a wire brush. Doing this can damage the throttle plate. You can buy throttle body cleaner at most parts stores. Make sure you clean up your IAC valve while its off, that thing gets gunked up bad after a while.

Gas pedal sticks in cold weather

clean the throttle body, a build up at the throttle plate will cause this 'sticking'-remove the air tube that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle body, and look down the throttle while you manually open the 'butterfly'-guarantee it is dirty. Clean it good with throttle body cleaner (use a rag to wipe/dry out the TB).

I have a kia sportage diesel 2002, it acelarates by self, without stepping on gas. What could be the problem?

May want to check the throttle cable. Sounds like it is sticking. You can spray sum WD-40 on it that usually helps. The throttle cable is the piece that moves when the gas pedal is pressed. Near the intake on top of engine normally.

My 1998 toyota camary gas pedal sticks at the top when in stop and go traffic. I have to tap it to get it unstuck and it works fine then it will stick again. I have lubricated it inside and out and not...

disconect the cable at the motor and work the throttle valve by hand checking to see if the throttle valve itself is sticking or the cable if the throttle valve is sticking you must remove the rubber hose that goes from the aircleaner box to the intake plenum where the valve is located then procede to spray carb cleaner inside where the throttle valve is in order to remove carbon deposits inside the plenum bore and all around the throttle valve bore itself. If the cable itself is sticking replace the cable, there is most likely rust deep inside the cable and its housing that can't be reached with lubricant.

Sticky gas pedal

it is a dirty throttle plate. $280 is an absolute ripoff for a cleaning, it is about 10-15 minutes of work. They are probably quoting replacing the throttle body which about a $150 part.

Got to Autozone and get "CRC Throttle Body Cleaner". Remove aire inlet hose at throttle body with a screwdriver. Spray a *small* bit onto throttle plate, use clean rag or qtips to remove gum/varnish. Spray pivots and also clean around perimeter of the plate. Take it to an independent mechanic if you are unsure of the procedure.
