Question about 2003 Volkswagen Beetle TDI

Lock in Park

I have a 2003 beetle & can't get it out of park, I can sometimes trick it to work but not often. I'm sure it has something to do with the brake lights because if I can get it out of park the brake lights work but if not they won't. Any ideas as to what I can do for a temp. fix, the closest VW dealer is over an Hr. away from where im located.

All models vw jettas and beetle in that year range were sent a letter from vw for a recall notice. the brake light switch enables the shifter to release from park. find a local dealer and call them and explain your concern.

My 2003 Buick Regal wouldn't start on a very cold day. I came back the next day and decided to shift it out of park and back into park and it started right up. What could cause that to happen? 3800 engine

When you said "it wouldn't start" did it turn over (starter cranking the engine) or did it act like the battery was dead and wouldn't crank, even though all the dash lights lit up?

If it simply didn't crank over but then by you shifting it out of park, then back into park, may indicate a park/neutral switch problem.

It may have been something as simple as the shifter, when the vehicle was last parked, didn't fully engage the park/neutral switch into the park position. BUT by you moving the shifter out and back into park it engaged the switch.

Cold weather can do some strange things sometimes when it comes to mechanical devices. IF it acts up again, simply try the "trick" that worked the last time.

It may just be temperature related and may not give any more problems once the weather warms up.

Hope this helps.

99 malibu, key won't turn in ignition (it's new cylinder and casing that worked fine before I changed gear shift back to park and connected the battery)

Shake ya sterring wheel from side to side and try turning ya key. The lock could be stuck and needs to be freed up. This should do the trick.

My 2000 beetle won't come out of park when the engine is on

Sometimes the steering wheel has a lock mode when the car is off, and then gets stuck there. Try wiggling the wheel after you start the car.

My daughter's car just got "Stuck" in the parked position, and the shift won't move out of park into reverse. The code that seems to light up (occassionally) is ECF. Anyone else have this problem?

check your brake light to see if it lit while this happen, if it does not lit then the brake light switch is bad. because the shift interlock switch must see the signal from the brake before it release to let you shift out of park for safety reason

2002 Land Rover Discovery rolls when it is in PARK.

It is known as the Parking Pawl assembly, and requires removal of the gearbox from the vehicle along with the transfer box. You then remove the extension housing (requiring new bolts) and then replace the park lock gear and o'ring.

How do you override the transmission shift lock on a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle, when it's stuck in Park?

On most cars of that year and newer you have to have the engine running and be pressing down on the brake pedal to shift out of park. If that does not work try having some one rock the car forward and back while you try to shift out of park. If the rocking trick works in the future while still in gear and holding the brakes set your parking break then shift to park. This will keep the weight of the car of the parking lock in the transmision and prevent the problem from reoccurring. Good Luck!!

Key switch does not shut all the way off(sometimes)

sounds like you may need new ignition cylinder with out more info, next time make sure the vehicle is all the way in park that could cause your problem because the shift cable may not be letting trans to fully lock into park but it is most likely the ignition cylinder

2003 Accord LX Not Shifting Out of Park on Random Occurances

Can you hear or feel a "click" in your gear selector when you hit the brakes? If you don't, the solenoid that disengages the lock could be sticking.
