No you dont need to take it off the steering wheel, you just unscrew the ignition assembly there, and you find the wiring and key dont forget to put markings each wire with a tape , so when you back you are not puzzled.. where to locate ,and forget a flash ligt or whatever lights in working like this....

Most of the time, yes. The new switch should have directions with it. Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} I suggest you buy the Chilton manual or equivalent for that car. Most parts store have them in stock. You will need to have the book, because of the air bag in most steering wheels. Some switches have a pin to push underneath and you do not need to take the steering wheel off.

The switch is straight in front of the driver side.

The best manual u must have found is the Bentley manual. It is far superior
to Chilton and better than Haynes. u can use both the Haynes and
Bentley in combination since the Bentley is the same manual that the
    dealerships use.

    Hope that helps

you do have to remove the steering wheel. It is a bear to do, but any
Chilton's manual should walk you through it. Be sure to disconnect the
battery and remove the fuse for the airbag before you begin. The
airbag could engage and that is an ugly price to pay for an ignition
    tumbler replacement. so be careful

use a small allen wrench to release the catch.

    that must do for u.

    refrence

dont forget to accept the solution if u go by it.

feel free for asking any doubts u have.

    thank u for ur cooperation.

good luck for getting fixed soon.

How do I change the ignition cylinder on a 97 Chevy c1500 if can't turn key to on/run.

You need to remove the steering wheel , turn signal control and in the steering column you will find a pin that holds the tumblers in place for the key switch. You can remove the pin and then remove the key tumbler and replace it. Go to You Tube and they have videos on just what you need to do to remove the steering wheel and etc. Hope this helps.

My 2001 PT Cruiser ignition switch will not turn. I have tried moving the steering wheel up and down, moving the steering wheel left to right while trying to turn the ignition on all to no avail. Help.

was the ignition switch getting hard to turn with the key for a while or did this just all of a sudden happen usually the problem has been going of for a while but people just ignore it until it gets to this point,it sounds like the tumblers in the ignition key switch have gone bad and the tumbler assembly needs to be replaced, the new tumbler assembly can keyed to the original key if the key is not worn out.this should be replaced with a new key if it is.

Replaced the ignition key switch and now my steering wheel clicks when i turn it what do i do

I've seen the plastic covers not go together correctly and rub the steering wheel. try removing the Key and tumbler and turn the steering wheel. Is the noise gone? Sometimes the new tumbler will not pull back the steering wheel lock enough and it will rub alittle. Check the steering wheel lock to see if it's pulling all the way away from the steering wheel.

Key stuck in ignition -- cannot turn on or off. Can an ignition switch cause the tumbler to lock up? Or does the ignition tumbler need to be replaced? If the ignition tumbler needs to be replaced, how...

lets start simple.get a can of silacone spray oil and spray into the switch and keep moving key and you will find this will reliese the key,if you need to remove the ign switch dont panic as its a simple enough job.Forget about steering wheel and whatever, simply remove the outer plastic cover then this exposes the switch at the back of switch is a plug with wires pull it away ,then below the key you should see a tiny screw undo, and make sure the steering lock is not under pressure,ie steering wheel free, when trying to remove switch move steering wheel back/forward and switch should pull out.good luck.adrian,,,,

How do you remove the ignition switch on a ford 250 1994 model?

Do you mean the key and tumbler, or the switch down on the bottom of the steering column? If you mean the switch, just lower your steering column by removing the cover at the bottom of the dash, and then remove the 2 bolts on either side of the column. The switch is near the base of the column, and the rod that runs from the ignition switch goes into it.
If you mean the key and tumbler, you have to pull the steering wheel, remove the screws from the signal cam, and then remove the locking bolt that holds the tumbler. You will need a steering wheel puller to remove the snap ring, and to reinstall.

95 suburban, ignition locks, can't turn key,

Remove the lower steering column cover and check to see if the rod from the ign. lock and tumbler to the ignition switch is binding up. If it's ok, you're problem may be the bearing under the steering wheel being broken.

Honda civic 2004 key will not turn in ignition switch even after moving the wheel for the tires to loosen

First try another key if you have one. Second insert the key and while slightly turning it wiggle the key in a upward & downward motion. Often this will allow the key to turn. What you need to do to correct the problem (provided your key is not the problem) is to replace the ignition switch tumbler. It sounds like you only need the tumbler and not the entire switch which would include the steering wheel lock pin.

The tumblers have wore down and won't let the key turn. At this point you need to have the tumbler set replaced.
