Hi there!

Obviously the engine has been sat with valves open, and corrosion will occur more on a petrol engine than a diesel.

I would advise removing the battery, and replacing with new, or at least a charged working one.

Check for any coolant in there, you will need some during initial start up, but this should have a coolant flush as soon as possible when running.

Check sump oil level. It is a very good idea to change the oil. Drain the old sump oil, and fill up to dipstick mark with el-cheapo brand 15-40 or similar.
Filling should be through the rocker cover - and do it fairly fast. This should put oil on the valve guides and stems.

Make sure the clutch is working and free. often it is not. Leave in neutral.

Take out spark plugs or heater plugs, and use a small bottle of 3in1 oil to pour about 20ml into the cylinder bores.

Turn ctankshaft by hand using socket bar. Eitherway to start it moving, then clockwise for a full 10 relolutions.

IF YOU FEEL RESISTANCE - STOP !

It is very likely a valve has stuck. Remove the rocker cover to see which one it is and try to free it.

If it turns over no problem for several revolutions - power up and crank it.

There is a risk of snapping the timing belt, and this should be replaced as soon as possible, but it is up to you how far you want to strip it before trying.

After the first fire-up, Replace rubber belts, drain oil, change filters & replace oil with fresh oil of your choice. Drain, flush and refill with fresh coolant. You may chose to replace hoses first if in poor condition.

Next - make sure all brakes are free and working, and that transmission works in all gears.

Hope this works for you.

    Hi,

I noticed you only rated this as helpful. I understand you consider this free advice helpful, but it's actually reduced my % mark.

Do you consider it to have left something out? If so, I can discuss this.

If not, I would really apreciate the Fixya! thanks.

Why does my car make a heavy clunking noise when I restart the engine after setting a short time?

Hi,

Have a listen near the oil pump. Could be a problem with bringing the oil to the engine. A clogged oil screen which is in the engine combined with a failing oil pump may be causing this.

This is a level 4 out of 5 DIY so be prepared for the work.

I hope that helps.

I REVERSERVED THE CABLES on a jumpstart and now the check engine light is on and the engine will only rev to 1200rpm.

Run fault codes to reset the CPU but be prepared for a CPU replacement as reversing the leads when jump starting can cause a failure in the CPU.

Low oil pressure

There is likely did some serious damage.
I visited my sister some years ago, and borrowed her Oldsmobile. I drove it 30 miles, and a rod started knocking. I barely made it home, and I had to pay 900 dollars for an engine overhaul.
4 years later she mentioned she had let the car run out of oil before my visit. Wasn't my fault after all.
I suggest you be prepared for engine failure. Here's how:
Talk to your friends and neighbors and arrange what you will do if you have car trouble.
Put an "emergency" plan into place, so you will be well prepared
for assistance.
For example, when you talk so people you trust, get their phone numbers and have them with you. You might choose to tell them why you might contact them at odd hours.
Get the phone number of a trusted towing service so you will have that for an immediate towing need. Carry that phone # with you.
I personally would not recommend you tear the engine down looking for damage, but having a honest repair garage phone number would be a good thing.

Turns over will not start

do you have spark at spark plugs, have you checked fuel pressure, could spray some carb. cleaner in intake and see if it will run then on carb cleaner but be carefull, if engine backfires could catch on fire so be prepared.

How to do a front end alignment. and what will i need to do this?

You will need an alignment rack and someone trained to operate it.
More expensive to buy than another car. On a 10 year old car prepare yourself to find that some of the front wheel components are shot and will have to be replaced before the alignment is done.

2006 Chevy Cobalt wont start. It doesnt turn over. All i can hear when i try to start it is a rapid clicking sord of sound. Any ideas!?

This means your battery is dead. Whether it's from a catastrophic failure of the battery, or something ran it down is to be determined later, but for now you should be able to jump start it to get it where you need to go. Be prepared for it to not start again once you shut it off, so make sure you're someplace you can get a jumpstart, or fix the car. If you charge the battery, or jump it and run it for a while, if it doesn't start again, you have a bad battery. If the alternator is bad, you'll get a big failure of the gauges and lights, and it will quit running altogether. If you're nearing about 60,000 miles, your alternator is running out of time anyways, so be prepared for that one.

I am getting hard starting and lack of power on my 1995 neon, 2.0 L dohc, automatic trans. Engine eventually starts and runs but sputters and misses. Please help

Make sure your radiator is full. Check this when cold. This condition on Dodge products is usually caused by one condition. All you have to do is change the coolant sensor. It is located near the thermostat housing at the end of the upper rad hose. Remove the wire plug & using a socket & ratchet unscrew the sensor. When replacing the new one, do not over tighten it, about 5-10 ft.lbs. only. There may be a slight loss of antifreeze so be prepared. Good luck!
