I have a 1997 Sabaru Lsi Outback with 107.000.0 mil.
Recently I have had trouble starting the car because of the starter solenoid "Clicking" but not engaging and turning over the engine. Once it finally engages it usually starts over the engine and starts. I installed a new battery and cleaned all of the terminals, etc. thinking it may be a pour battery condition, however, it also just began to overspeed and strange noises??

Have you checked each connection between the battery and starter for 12 volts? It could be a weak battery, faulty starter, faulty solenoid, dirty cable connections, or weak battery cables. A Ford product must have 11.5 volts or more to engage the starter.
If your battery is good then it could be one of two things. First there is a solenoid on the inner fender that could be bad or it is the solenoid on the starter. Have someone listen where the noise is coming from.
So remove push-on connector from Solenoid wire. Should be clean, secure & relay bracket grounded. Connect a jumper wire between battery positive terminal & the exposed terminal on the solenoid. If starter motor now operates then it's the ignition switch. If starter motor does not operate then replace solenoid.
not sure if this will help, but I recently changed the engine in my subaru and changed battery + starter also. Would start but then not restart once warmed up. Turns out the engine ground got forgotten, had that hooked back up after banging my head on a wall for a week and it runs like new
The starter is separate from the soleniod; It could be a part called the bendix on the starter itself. If you can remove it, take it to a auto parts store- they will check it for free.
Check water pump or bad radiator there is a circulation problem. As a last resort check and make sure its not a bad head-gasket check oil for antifreeze look under oil filer cap for cream-ish white residue. Good Luck
