My problem seems very similiar, and have yet to made an attempt to fix it. While driving uphill going 55 mphs the engine cut off without any abnormal sounds. Truck had no signs of hesitation either. My foot was on the gas pedal when this occured. Speed declined at same rate as if you turned off the engine. After getting it to the side of the road. Placed 2 gallons of gasoline into the tank. Since, the fuel level was low to start with, and later added another 5 gallons. Nearly, half a tank and whenever any attempt was made to start it. Engine would crank, but wouldn't turn over. Engine temp was low to starting it only up a few miles away. Coolant level was at cold fill line, yesterday temp was 100 degrees and today it was 98 degrees. Battery is still good, and voltage gauge shows normal voltage.

    Questions include:

    1. If it is my fuel pump or fuel sender, are they easy to reach and exchange out?

    2. Is the problem more likely a relay gone bad?

    3. Could this problem be in part due to having low amount of fuel, and cause the fuel pump to stop working? Still trying to find the fuel pump switch/reset button.

It may have a broken timing belt.If you can pull the plastic cover back a little on the front of the engine to see in there, have someone crank it and see if the cam pulley is turning. On some you can look in the oil filler cap hole and see the cam,Crank it and see if it is turning. If there is nothing turning you will need a timing belt. I think the replacement spec on that belt is 60-70 thousand miles. Anyway if it is original you will want to replace it anyway just because of age. Hope this helps and let me know....Dan

SOURCE: 1991 ford ranger wont start

I do believe the FORD is located under ther hood either on the firewall or on L/S wheel housing. Have encountered many , many faulty control modules. There came a time if you came across a Ford product with a no start, you automatically suspected it, and 90% of the time you were right.

1997 ford ranger will start and go into gear but wont move. I kept trying untill there was smoke coming out from under the truck that smelled like burned rubber. Did I destroy my transfer case?

If it's a manual shift your clutch is slipping. If so, transmission must be removed and clutch, bearings and pressure plate must be serviced.
