Shifter will not release

  • kjturve Dec 01, 2008

I have a 1999 that is having the same problem, the brake lights are coming on, but can't get it out of park.

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2009

I had the same problem with it not shifting out of park. That was fixed but the windshield wipers won't work. The motor was replaced and it blew the fuse. Another moter, and again it blew the fuse. Any advice for these winshield wipers?

Turn the key to on without starting the engine, try and shift into gear, if it works, you brake switch need to be replaced.

Is your car manual or auto? If manual push your clutch and shift several time, and it will release.

Mine did the same thing take the councel over the break lever off. one screw on each side. then take the councel cover off (pull out the center of the plastic plugs then plug pulls out). when you get that off take the 2 screws out of the shifter handle, and the 4 screws holding the black shift indicator panel out. unplug light. the switch on the right side is black and has a white shaft coming out that releases the shifter. pull it all the way out towards the dash and put 2 large zip ties around the white shaft so it cant go back in. easy as can be. problem fixed save you 200 bux for the switch.

I have a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. One side of the back seat goes down, but the other side won't. What's going on? There's no button, there's no lever?

Question edited for correct spelling of model 'Z2 X' to 'ZX2'.
Question moved to model category.

It looks like a split rear seat, 1/3 -- 2/3. The catches would be in the boot, upper left and right. Regs dictate it can't be done sitting in the seat.

Shifting Problem

Could be a worn out piolet bearing located in the back of the crankshaft in front of the clutch plate.

The shifter on our 2001 Ford Escort will not release so we can put it in gear. What is the problem and how do we fix it?

I take it that it is a auto gearbox. The brake needs to be pressed before it will release, safety measure. If not the cable needs to be adjusted, Please give more info on the problem.

I have a 1998 ford escort zx2 and the back left

If you can still find a replacement left light lens of your 1998 ford escort zx2, you can replace it, of course. Just
take off the mounting screw of the lens, and take off the
defective lens. Then, you can mount the replacement.

2002 ford escort zx2 camshaft sensor fit a 99 zx2?

Yes, All the years of the ZX2 utilize the same engine. 1998-2003 are all the same except for ECU programing and the MAF wiring. You should not have a problem.

My 98 Escort ZX2 manual transmisson seems to shift gear hard!

Clutch may be smooth but this is a sign of the clutch needing replaced. Some of these models have a linkage adjustment under the hood. Others are hydrallic and need fluid. Look under the hood where the steering is and see which you have and address accordingly. Good luck. Check on costs of clutch replacement.
