    what is a map sensor?

  • bonnesamedi Mar 29, 2009

I have a 97 cavalier 2.2 with the same problem. It first appeared 3-4 months ago. I've changed the plugs, the car was running well for about 2 months. Then the problem came back, with the battery light on. I've replaced the alternator, the wires and again the plugs (AC DELCO). The wires are not AC DELCO I don't know exactly witch brand but I've asked the guy at the auto part to give me the best. Then a week later, the problem came back and this time, the fuel pomp was running everytime like crazy with a sound telling me 'replace me please!!'. I replaced it, a entire week end on my back on the drive way. It is a used one. Now the pump is running great, but still the same problem until it stalled completely. Before it stall, I heard little explosions in the cat like it was not burning gas on one or more cylinder. Also had backfires in the throttle boddy. I made holes in the cat and the car started, but the same problem was still making me crying. The scan gave me PO171 (running lean), PO300 (Multiple missfires), PO335 (Crankshaft position sensor). Tested compression on 4 cylinders and it's 150-160. All 4 plugs and making fire. So it's not a problem with the motor. I had a injector that was leaking.. had it replaced at a repair shop about 1 month before the problem appeared for the first time. At highway speed, the car is running well with only a few misfires. The accelerations are good. Pass 1000-1500 rpm there is no problem...

I am to bring it back to the repare shop to install a new cat and after I will start it but I'm sure the problem will not be fixed. I think maby:
    -coil pack
    -egr valve
    -oxygen sensor
    -crankshaft position sensor
    -vacuum leak
    -intake gasket
    -many other problems

I can't replace all these parts and spend my vacations on this. And the car has something like 500$ value. I just want my wife and children to have a safe ride around with no need of a towing every month... Before I go to the repair shop, I want to know is there a way to scan it and to know exactly whitch part is wrong? Not just an overall like a po300... Thanks!

It kind of sounds like the dealership is taking you for a ride.

Any reputable repair shop would know how to diagnose fuel and ignition problems without having you dump un-needed parts into it.

When it stalls out, is the check engine light coming on?

Are the gauges "flickering" or "jumping" anything odd like that?

I know these sound like odd questions, but I am trying to narrow it down a bit.

    Could really be anything.

    A few questions:

Do you smell gas when it is trying to start?

Are you sure the fuel filter has not been installed backwards?

What exactly was the car doing which made you replace these parts? Example.. were you just driving it and it started doing this?

Have you had the fuel pressure regulator checked? Also you might want to have the fuel pump relay checked.

    Could be the MAP sensor..

  • Tigger3738 Jun 21, 2008

Manifold Absolute measures the pressure in the intake manifold and adjusts the cars fuel to air mixture. for instance if your just crusing around it sends a signal to the main comp..and it will adjust that mixture making a "leaner" fuel mixture..if your on the gas (like i am lol) it will make the mixture richer than normal to compensate..

Missing no power

Having the Yr make and model and engine size will really help out on the car that you have. but you could have a bad ECM and bad Coil packs or you might have just 1 bad coil pack on the vehicle. the coil packs and the ECM get looked over by a lot of people.

Signs of a bad coil pack

Kia take more than one O2 sensor, and they are probably original equipment, so start there. Also, replace plug wires. There is also a fuel filter that is the old style filter, needs replaced too. This sounds like all it needs to me is some TLC!!! O2 sensors are going to be $130.00 or less. Plug wires are $30.00. Filter-$10.00. Not too bad a price to get your performance and economy back!!

2001 4.3 silverado...put new fuel pump and mas air flow last week...was running fine til yesterday. started running real rough gad to pull over...was actiung like a bad wire or plug so i changed them,

did you replace the coil packs as each cylinder has on most cars 1 pack per 2 cylinders so a 4 cylinder car has 2 packs and so on hope this helps

Car makes loud humming/whistling noise from under the rear by fuel tank/pump then car kills.

You describe a failing fuel pump. The fact he had it changed 3 times tells me the quality of the pumps was not great, or there is a problem with venting or something else.
If he did not change the fuel filter the pump would fail quickly. Since you changed the filter the next pump may last a long time.
A quality brand makes a big difference in this component.

My car had a hard time turning over the yesterday and last night when i went to leave it wouldn't turn over at all what would cause this?

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--

1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.

2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.

3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.

4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.

5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it's a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.

Thanks. keep updated for any more can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
