It is known that you may not have a head gasket leak if you are not over heating not loosing fluid but you find water in the oil they have hemi heads and in between the cam valve cover is a two piece gasket and i have seen them leak when ya go thru a puddle and water can get into your spark plug hole and leak water into you engine so always take the valve cover off and look for a trail of water leaking down from the gasket it could be all that it is ..
Try to check, is it enough space to get the head bolt out without removing the cam? if ok, just follow your opinion. haynes maybe just told you to minimize the risk to broke the distributor.
Typically this has to do with timing, check the timing
