I am getting the p0410 code on my 2001 blazer. I disconnected the pump and applied 12v directly to it an it runs. I found no traces of water in the pump. my question is how does the computer determine that there is a problem with the pump that generates the p0410 code? Is there a sensor? Does the computer check current draw on the circuit that runs the pump?

The TSB calls for the replacement of the AIR pump and the installation of a new secondary injection hose. The TSB can be found on this ACDelco site. Additionally, if you simply replace the AIR pump the problem may return again (and again). If you replace the pump, also clean out the hoses and replace the one-way check valve. If this is on a GM model that the TSB applies to, follow those instructions in the link above. In a few cases, people have put a small hole in the rubber cover on the pump which allows any water to drain out. A code P0410 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0410 indicates that your secondary air injection system is not functioning properly.
Not all 2001 Chevrolet Bazers are equipped with secondary air injection. The secondary air injection system was added to vehicles that were to be sold in certain areas where the emissions laws required it, like the State Of California.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the system by commanding the secondary air blower motor to run and the air injection solenoid to open. This causes additional oxygen to enter the exhaust system. The PCM then monitors the signal from the oxygen sensors to see if the commanded air has in fact, entered the exhaust system. Code P0410 sets when the PCM has commanded the blower motor on and the solenoid open and there is little or no change in the oxygen sensor signal.

GM has had some problems with these systems and there has been a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued that addresses some of the known concers. Below is a brief description of the TSB and the issues involved.

Condition
Some customers may comment on the SES/MIL light being illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find a DTC P0410 indicating that there is a concern in the secondary air injection system.
Cause
Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump.
Correction
Replace the AIR pump and install a new inlet hose and solenoid tube assembly...

The bulletin goes on and gives detailed information on how to perform the repair and the part numbers of the replacement parts needed to do so. Your local dealer can provide the parts for you and you can probably get them to print out a complete copy of the bulletin for you. It is not really hard to do if you want to do this yourself.

In any cold climate, especially in climates with higher humidity, this water may be more excessive. The water partially fills the AIR pump, it can then freeze. When the PCM commands the pump on, if the pump is frozen it cannot turn, thus overloading the circuit and "popping" the fuse.

Possibly symptoms include:
* MIL illumination obviously
* Hesitation on acceleration
* Noise from a bad/stuck AIR pump

Causes:

chances are if they didn't put the trans in the right way - they probably screwed something else up or try this :

Start up your car cold, if you don't hear a sound like a vacuum cleaner running under your car you probably need a new air pump.
First, check the maxi-fuse in the underhood fuse block for the AIR pump.
If it's blown then you need to get under the car on the driver's side.
Remove the front cover and look at the bottom cover on the air pump, if it's dislodged and full of water the pump probably sucked up some water and committed suicide. There is a bulletin out to replace the air pump and the intake duct with a redesigned part that is not so suceptible to water intrusion. Also it's possible that the connector is burnt up, I have seen some with new air pumps set codes because of a fried electrical connection.
