Question about 1995 Saab 900

1 Answer

95 Saab 900

I bought the car last July ('07) and the AC worked fine. By September is stopped working so I had Vavoline during an oil change look it over and they charged it.

Two weeks later the AC stopped working again.

I just had a mechanic look it over and found that there was 400 pounds of pressure in the lines. I took it to an AC guy and he discovered the low speed cooling fan was not coming on and he doesn't like the way the compressor sounds. When he put a shop fan in front of the radiator the AC came on nice and cold.

I am a little leary that this guy is trying to get me to spend well over a thousand dollars to repair everything. And after I read a little more I am now wondering if the problem isn't something more simple.. I checked the cooling fan, low speed fuse and that's fine... I don't have the ability to check the Relay or the wires.. but are there things that should be checked before automatically trying to replace the fan engine and the compressor?

If the low speed fan doesn't come on, but the system works when cooling air is blown through it, that says that whatever temperature sensor is used is working. It also seems that, if the fuse is OK, then the switch for the fan isn't working. There should be a switch module down there near the fan (you'd see wires from the fan to a harness, and it'll plug into a module). I'd be willing to try replacing that switch and see if it solves the problem.

Driving in very hot weather, stopped at light,

you may have blown the head gasket.
check the coolant level,is it low?
if it is ok,check the fan switch on the radiator, change the thermostat, and check that the fan is working.
the fan has to work, saab engines run very hot.
there is a after run fan switch as well that measures engine compartment temperature, and can start the fan even with the car off,so be careful.

Saab 95, 900 SE

If you are on your original fuel pump, be advised that they are known to last, on average, about 100,000 miles. Another common fault, besides that and the direct ignition cassette you have already mentioned, is the crankshaft position sensor. The prelude to total failure of this component may prevent starting or cause stalling and rough running. The ECU needs the signal from this sensor to know when to signal the DIC to fire a particular plug.
