I'd say "it's not in the fuel tank", but I'd probably be lying. I have a '95 Nissan Pickup and the fuel pump is in the tank. I think that's where they put it when they added fuel injection to these vehicles in the mid-80s. I have the Haynes manual at home and should be able to get a better answer this evening.

I verified with the Haynes manual that the fuel tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump. The good news is that there is a drain plug so you can drain the tank before you drop it. Good luck!

Hi I am working on a 1991 nissan pathfinder and it is not getting any gas. I put a new fuel pump and a new fuel filter and changed the fuel pump relay, But still no gas. you can hear the pump kick on. and...

Disconnect ( or at least loosen) the fuel line as close to the engine fuel delivery system as you can and see if there is fuel pressure. You may have a vapour lock. If you do get pressure how much ? Is it sufficient to supply your requirements. A "new fuel pump" does not always mean a "good fuel pump" - from experience!!! If you do not have fuel at the engine work back to each fuel line connection to were there is fuel pressure if at all. I am not a Nissan expert but the principles are the same for all. You do not say if it is fuel injected or carburated. FI requires higher pressures than carbs. Hope this helps. Let me know how you do in your efforts. Thanks Good luck.

Where is the fuel pump located ? Is it in the tank?

The fuel pump assembly is located in the fuel tank. Refer to the fuel tank assembly illustrations in this section. On most applications, the fuel tank must be lowered to remove the fuel pump assembly. The fuel pump assembly is cooled by the fuel in the tank.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 1
  1. Before disconnecting the fuel lines or any of the fuel system components, release the fuel system pressure as described previously in this section. Releasing system pressure is a very important step for the correct removal of the electric fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Unfasten the fuel pump assembly electrical connector and remove the fuel tank inspection cover.

If the truck has no fuel tank inspection cover, the fuel tank must be lowered or removed to gain access to the in-tank fuel pump.
    1. Disconnect the fuel outlet and return hoses. Remove the fuel tank assembly, if necessary.
    2. Remove the ring retaining bolts and the O-ring, then lift the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Plug the opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt from entering the system.

When removing or installing the fuel pump assembly, be careful not to damage or deform it. Always install a new O-ring.
    To install:
    1. Install the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank with a new O-ring. Install the ring retaining bolts. Install the fuel tank if removed.
    2. Reconnect the fuel lines and fasten the electrical connection.
    3. Connect the battery cable, then start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

The "Check Engine Light'' may stay on after installation is completed. If so, the trouble code in the control unit's memory must be erased. To erase the code, disconnect the battery cable for 10 seconds, then reconnect it a verify that the light is extinguished.

Car stalls when put in neutral 2002 pathfinder

This is a fuel system related problem.

Consider replacing the fuel pump (located in the fuel tank and can be reached from beneath the back seat) and the fuel filter which is located in the hood.

Take good care and rate this solution.
