I have 1994 firebird with stock LT-1. When I first start it up it starts with no problem. After it heats up it is hard to crank like if the timing is to high. Is there a way to fix this.

Common problem with older cars but it still applies, the starter is getting too hot and the armature is shorting, install a heat deflector between the starter and the exhaust, hopefully the starter is still good

Your computer on your firebird is logging a trouble code when the check engine light comes on. Save yourself some money and go to a local parts store to use a scanner. Most parts stores will hook up to your car for free and tell you the codes that are being logged. You can spend a lot of money assuming what parts may be malfunctioning by just throwing parts at your car. Check it first and you will be money ahead.

96 Firebird Formula, 5.7 LT-1, 6-speed manual starter problem

Starter Have a friend turn the key to the start position while you tap the starter with a hammer. If the starter is going bad but has not completely failed most of the time it will start when you tap on it.
Ignition switch If the key turnes easily and lights, radio, etc. come on when it is in the on position I don't think it is the switch. Plus if the starter has never been replaced I'd say the chance that is the problem is very high.

At times cranks and runs fine other times it will not crank

Hello edspring1...the little key chip you mentioned is the onboard security system for your firebird...GM called it the VAT system..it's possible this could be the cause of the no start conditions, sometimes they will reset if you disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 mins.
I really dont think that is your problem though...under the steering pillar...there is a "slider" type ignition switch...meaning...the terminals slide togather to make contact when the key is turned...these darn things get worn to a point they start arching and eventually wont make contact at all...i replaced one last week on a 95 firebird that had the same problem you are describing now.
i'll post a pic of the slider set in position for a tilt steering and non-tilt column....note the difference.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

97 firebird formula hard to cold start

Check the cold start injector useing a digital multimeter with a bar graph. Unplug the injector wires and insert the probes into the wiring plug, crank the engine and the bar graph should pulse if it does remove the injector and with the wiring reconnected and the injector held over a suitable container crank the engine and observe the spray pattern. If insufficient replace injector. This should be a starting point at least
