Question about 2001 Suzuki Xl 7

Stalls when stopping & decelerating

When I stop at a light or decelerate while turning it stalls. On the highway it will lurch as if not getting any fuel. Changed the filter and still does the same thing, getting worse.

We could never get the car to act up while hooked up to the computer. Finally it did while we had it hooked up and sure enough it was the TPS. Changed it ourselves, but still had to have the computer re-programmed by Suzuki. Thanks for the great advice, without it we would have ordered a fuel pump and wasted $350.00! Thanks!

It sounds like the TPS throttle position sensor isn't working correctly. You need to find out what your fuel pressure is. If it's below specs., a new fuel pump will be needed.

What causes car to stall while driving

Honestly, it is not possible to answer your question accurately without further detail.
  • How fast are you going when the vehicle stalls?
  • Are you on open highway or in stop-and-go city traffic?
  • Are you accelerating? Decelerating? Idling?
  • Are you going uphill? Level road? Downhill?
  • What are the ambient weather conditions? Hot? Cold? Clear? Rainy? Daytime? Night time? Lights on? Lights off?
  • Is your CHECK ENGINE light illuminated while the car is running? If so, have you extracted the codes?
  • Were there any precursor symptoms to the failure?
  • Have you tried any diagnostic steps?
Also, please understand that it is not uncommon for a 12 year old vehicle to experience failures. Has it had a major tune-up? Has it been properly maintained? Do you know the repair history of the vehicle?

Hi, first check for vacuum leaks. If it's running rich, check the fuel pressure regulator diaphram.

Check the crankshaft position sensor. It is located forward of the harmonic balancer.Quite often the bracket that holds it gets broke or loosens up allowing sensor to rub on balancer.
