Hi billberger2

When the air conditioner turns on, the car computer also increases the engines revs to counter the load of the air con. It should not generally be noticeable however. Will do some research to see why. :)

There is a post here about a modification to the idle air bypass valve., an electrically operated device that allows more air through the throttle body. this device may be faulty or maladjusted and cause the symptoms that you have. You can buy a new one here.

Have you been able to do a diagnostic scan at all. This can help with diagnosis of a problem to do with mixture and fuel control. A faulty sensor may be causing the problem. By how many revs is it surging?

My 1998 crown vic has a wierd power surge, lights go brighter, dimmer also motor seems to surge in and out also...battery and alt tested good...every elec sys seems to be affected.I took both bat cables...

It may be a bad battery, that is sinking power at some times and rejecting it at others. First check battery connections are firm tight and free from grease on the surfaces that join. If still a problem and battery is more than a year old, replace it with new.

The idle adjustment screw in throttle body has carbon build up on its tip.need to remove screw clean depoisits off tip, carbon in idlescrew port(with carb clean) re-install idle screw, seat it,then back out 1 1/2 turns.start car and hold at higher idle to blow out carb. clean &deposits out of throttle body then recheck for surging once warmed up.

You could have a bad or contaminated Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. You can get a used one online for less then 100. You can also purchase a can of MAF sensor cleaner at a local auto supplies store and clean it. It located right at the air filter housing.

My 2001 nissan altima feels like it isn't getting gas when I am idling. I had the fuel filter changed and it still wants to die on me. Do you know how to increase the rpms, so it will run higher when I am...

Hi Jerry,
Is the idle surging?? going up and down, while at idle?? and not beeing nice and smooth, or the RPM's just drop down and the car dies?? You don't want to touch any of the factory settings on the throttle chamber aka idle screw on the throttle body. That's factory set for life. You may have a IAC -AAC valve problem which a "air volume control valve". Buut let me know first, what you find as far as the "surging up/down goes", but it doesn't die.

Try cleaning the idle speed control airbypass valve, they get sludged up and cause this kind of idle problem.
