Question about 1996 Audi A4
I had the same problem, and it turned out to be the drive chain tensioner. They are manufactured with plastic guides that break at around 100,000 miles. This guide breaks and causes the chain to skip a tooth. When that happens the engine will lope at idle. This could possibly be your problem as well.

Maximil, you probably could. i didn't do it myself . it was done at a garage in manchester which specialize in audi/vw's. it only cost £40 and it took them 1hr. basically, as i understood it, they disconnected the throttle body and where the gold butterfly switch is, they cleaned that carefully with carb cleane. it was an excellent job and the car ran like new, very responsive. if you are in the UK +new manchester, then i'll post you the number for the garage - good honest mechanics unllike a host of other garages that i took the car to who diagnosed it incorrectly and tried to rip me off!!! believe me, i researched this problem for about a year before i got it sorted!!!
