I have a chevy equinox (2005) and sometimes it has a hard time starting. the engine has to turn over several times (more than I would expect) and sometimes I have to push the gas a little to get it to start.

just chiming in even though this is years old because i didnt see this answer. Theres a video on youtube and many equinox owners saying this worked.... clean the throttle body!
Try turning your steering wheel hard to left or right while trying to turn the key and see if that resolves tour problem. Sometimes if you shut the engine off with the wheels turned the power steering will hold pressure against the steering lock mechanism.

Equinox/Torrent body vehicles have a common ign cylinder problem. The repair is supposed to be to remove the cylinder , clean and coat end with PTE grease. This seldom works. The best way to fix a non turning cylinder is to replace it.
possably, in you case check and change your plugs that may help also along with a fuel cleaner, also check for any air hose that may be faulty for this tip look at my other ones on how to seek out a faulty air hose
