I have a '99 Lexus ES300 coach edition. Over the last few months I have had a battery drain issue which has left me stranded on more than one occasion. I was told it was the alternator and paid over $400 for the repair and replaced the battery. Within two weeks I was stranded yet again. After waiting for over an hour for the tow truck company my car suddenly had the dash lights come on and started right up. The shop was unable to duplicate this result. It has been about 6 months with no issues until now. I tried to jump start the car with no result. I hear that this could actually be the security module locking down the car when it goes on the fritz. Is there a way to disable the security system while still having the doors lock and unlock without the key fob?

If your is exhibiting the same signs as a dead battery it really sounds like your alternator is bad. If you are handy, you can remove the alternator and take it to an autoparts store like autozone and they will test it for you. This is not a hard job to do, usually 2 electrical connections, 3-5 mounting bolts and you have to pop the belt off. Just reverse it to install a new one. Good luck! - Nick

With the doors shut, insert the key into the drivers door lock. Lock and unlock the door 5 times. This should reset the system. If that doesn't work you should contact a qualified repair shop.

I just changed the cabin filter of my ES300. I found the instructions on the manual, under airconditioning and audio. It's pretty easy to do. I bought the filter from Kragen's for $21.95.

you have to have a main key. you may be able to remove the panel and release that way. under dash. pull cable.
