If the timing chain popped, there's a good chance that the pistons slapped and damaged the engine valves. Any mechanic replacing the chain should have checked for valve damage, especially considering that the extra work would have meant getting more of your hard-earned cash. Pick a decent mechanic, and have him run a compression check for you. This is a simple test that will tell if there is valve damage, and if so, on what cylinders. Be prepared for a fairly costly valve job.

Timing went out .how to fix it

if u think it jumped timing u will have to replace the timing chain. to do this locate timing chain cover and remove it. then find #1 cylinder and remove spark plug. turn engine till the piston is all the way to top of cylinder. u can tell this by placing a screwdriver in hole and turn engine by moving engine a little at a time till u feel piston come to top. unplug spark plugs so engine does not start. remove the timing chain and gears put chain on making sure that timing marks on gears line up perfect. if u are off just one tooth it will not run right. put back together. if u don't have one go to auto parts store and get repair book for your explorer. it gives u step by step inst. on the project

Can a plug foul out while running? on a 190 E mercedes, it was running rich to begin with and it began missing, i stepped on the gas and actually redlined. then the car just shut off? i think that it might...

Whovever did the head repplacement should have replaced the chain. If they did not then you probably lost teeth on the gears and chain went wild in there. Back firing can mean alot of things and can definatly support what you are saying.

If you redlined the vehicle any number of things can happen with no load to slow the engine down.

Timing belt or chain??

You need to get that car outta there as fast as you can. They are going to rip you off. Timing belts do not just happen to go out in a mechanic shop. I would call an attorney right now and halve that attorney call them and threaten to take them to court. They did something to it that will be and easy fix for them but they will try to charge you sevral hundred dollars. It was in their care when it went then they are responsible for fixing it. Call that attorney and see what he says and get back to the way. If the timing belt went then the car will spin really fast and have no compression How long did they have the car before they told you? I will await you answer. I really am sorry for you. Raz

97 marquis, owner stated car shut while driving, oil light came on he added oil, car the cranked, drove home, next day while driving car shut off again, same problem, adds oil(but doesn't check dipstick,...

yes that is a sure sign of a blown head gasket! water and anti-freexe is heavier than oil and settles to bottom and will not mix with oil and will be the first out of the holel!.

hopefully this help you. good luck man
