My engine is smoking i changes the belt , water pump , spark plugs , transmission is fine and my mechanic said i need to change the rings on the engine how much would that cost and i have a 2003 hyundai accent

White smoke coming out exhaust


If the smoke is only when you first start it I would be looking at your valve stem oil seals, this is no serious problem to your driving and with the right gear and knowledge can be changed in car . But if your smoke is more constant than the story changes, your oil control rings have failed and this needs an engine overhaul. 2 things you need to remember is fuel burns black, oil burns white and head gaskets show visible problems, water or air leaks both external and internal so your mechanic may be correct

Where to begin.
Any chance you can take the truck back for a refund ??
If not, you have some major expenses ahead.
If the oil is in the cylinders, the odds are you have rings and valve guide wear which would require rebuilding the engine. Replacing the valve cover gaskets would only be a concern if the oil is on the outside of the spark plugs. Fixing one thing such as rings or valves with that many miles on the truck would not be realistic.
The bearings and oil pump and so on would have 192k on them.
The timing belt and water pump should be replaced every 75,000 miles, so you should be on the third one now and another due at 210k.
The big issue is the mileage on the truck. Replacing or rebuilding the engine now would be a big investment on a truck that is close to the end of life regarding the rest of the components such as suspension and transmission. The 3.0 engine and drive train have a life expectancy of 200k in most situations. Not to say it can't last any longer, but the odds go down after that number.

I took out the fuel injectors and they looked fairly well after cleaning them off. I have changed the thermostat about 6 months ago so I know that its not sticking or messed up. I have a new distributor, spark plugs, spark plug wires so that not it. I changed the valve cover gasket and the O-rings. I have a fairly new start. I have a new alternator and I changed the belts also for that. I have been in the timing belt area because I had to replace the water pump. Once I changed all of this stuff the car has ran fine for the past year or more. The one thing I have not changed and I know is bad is the head gasket which I have been told is a big job. I don't think that would cause the car not to start though. I also changed the air filter and the fuel filter. I checked the fuel regulator and it seems fine. The last time I tried to start it was 2 days ago and I was spraying starting fluid into the injection system. It would start but very poorly and their was white smoke coming out of the tailpipes and after about four times of cranking and trying to start it also had some backfire. I checked the oil level and it is fine. The transmission is fine. That wouldn't stop the car from starting. their is gas going to the engine cause I check the main fuel line on top of the engine. After reading some other people post I think I will check the O2 sensor and see if that is bad. I would also think that I need to check the catalytic converter. After I check these couple of things I will get back to everyone one what has happened and if it works. I do believe my timing belts are fine but I will check to make sure again since the last time I checked them was when I changed my water pump about 5 months ago. Thanks for the helpful responses.

My 97 honda accord is blowing white smoke and running rough then i went to start it now it wont start


Sounds like either a blown motor (rings need replaced) or a bad head gasket or cracked head.
If the rings are bad your car would have felt like it was losing power because the engine will no longer have the same high compression that it's required to turn the wheels. You may have heard your engine knocking or seen a light blue colored smoke coming from your exhaust as a result of your engine burning up oil in the combustion chamber from the rings leaking.
If your head gasket is leaking or your head is cracked you'd likely find milky looking oil when you drain your oil from water/antifreeze being mixed in and noticed a white smoke coming from your exhaust that is actually water vapor coming through the exhaust.
If your car was running rough when you last shut it off try pulling all of your spark plugs and either cleaning them or replacing them all. A bad head gasket or bad rings can both foul spark plugs. A car will run rough with 1 or 2 fouled plugs, but once enough foul it will no longer run at all just sit and crank over. If changing the plugs get's it started for ya, check your tailpipe first for water, if nothing, change your oil. If no signs of water/antifreeze or milky colored oil then it's probably rings.

The valve cover gasket isn't hard to change. Oil on the plugs indicates a more serious problem. Smoke from the exhaust would be from rings, rich mixture, worn valve guides. It may be that the engine is overfull (that would show on the stick). Oil loss from a leaking gasket would smoke under the hood and leave oil on the engine and the ground.

My 94 acura legend blows blue smoke but not all the time why? also iam loseing water under the car and i think its the water pump how do you change that and will that make it smoke at times? Dave


The water pump won'tcause blue smoke. If it's coming out of the tail pipe, and then going away as the engine heats up, that's because your catalytic converter is doing away with the smoke, once it kicks in. That won't last forever, as your cat will plug up from this. Oull the spark plugs, and see if you have evidence of oil burning, not oil fouling. Fram / autolite gives nice diagnostic pictures in their master cataloge. Most parts stores will have a copy. As far as the water pump, need engine size.

what engine do u have? if it is a 3.5 then u must remove the upper intake manifold, the plugs are under that, each plug has its own coil, remove the coils and then the spark plugs are under the coils in a deep wells.Plugs are theonly thing changed on a tune unless u have a dirty air filter for the engine.

Serpentine belt broke and the v belt broke. i


How long did you keep driving the car after the belt broke? The engine is cooled by the water pump, the pump works only with the belt.If the cars engine was hot (normal at 212 degrees) and the belt broke that runs the water pump,and you kept driveing even a short distance you could have overheated the engine. If the knock is a deep solid sound the piston connecting rod bearings spun and the engine needs repaired or replaced.Its sad to say but an engine without a water pump is just like a person trying to live without a heart.If the heart stops the person stops.

clean your MAF sensor first. Use spray carb cleaner and toothbrush gently. 2 wires in there get coated with varnish and lean out fuel mixture.
MAF in air intake.
