Ignition problems I start the car and drive a few miles. When I turn the car off and return a few moments later, I get no response from the car. The engine wont even turn over. It only starts after the car sits for several hours.

Look, check the distributor and you got to make sure that the first cylinder are aligned.
look, if its not check your timing to make sure that the timing is off.

check for a bad connection like a bad ground at the battery, make sure both terminals are tight at the battery, the starter and the ground at the engine. the shop that installed the EGR should have erased the codes, after 50 to 100 miles you would be able to go through emissions.

Car won't turn over randomly

When it will not crank, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the clutch safety switch, and the key switch.

Have you had the engine scanned for trouble codes? You didn't say anything about a check engine light, but I think the computer may have some stored trouble codes that would have something to do with the problem.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

2003 ford focus- ignition key won't turn

Your not the only one with this problem. There is a piece in the lock known as the sidebar, that jams this lock up. Lock needs to be replaced. There are few people I just researched on Ebay that are selling this lock. Just do a search on Ebay Motors for Focus Ignition lock.
