The car runs fine after it warms up? Is it running with the check engine light off? But it does come on with the key before the engine is started? If the coolant temperture senser is bad ( or disconnected someway) the check engine light will be on but the car might run OK at normal operating tempertures. Have the car checked for codes. It's OBDI so you might have to find a service provider that can ceck the codes on this pre OBDII car. If it turly runs good at normal operating tempertures and the transmission is'nt low on fluild then the coolant senser does'nt always turn the check engine light on if it's bad and still reading something but wrong. Truly running good and the coolant is full ( all the way). chage the senser and see what happens as thier cheap and easy to change with commn hand tools.
The ces light comes on briefly until the system does it's self checks and verifies everything is ok then it's shuts it off. If it goes out, that's a good thing. The very fact that the light illuminates is telling you the system is working. Let me know if you need anything else.
sounds like it's not truly full of coolant. If the check engine light is on investagate that the coolant temoerture senser may not be changing but if it has a circuit it might not turn the check engine light on. Watch the coolant temperture senser for values with a scanner and you may find the engine does'nt warm up correctly as the therostaet is stuck on.
if the light is blue it just means the car is not at operating temperature yet. let the car warm up before driving. if the light is red and only stays on for seconds check the coolant level. could possibly be a bad level sensor also if the light is red
I had this same problem with my 1997 Blazer, which required a fuel pump replacement as Nitrobike said. The sign to look for is when you get in the Blazer, turn your key forward to the accessory position, but not the start position. You should hear the fuel pump charging. It sounds like a hissing or whirring noise for about 2-3 seconds while it pumps fuel into the lines to prime the engine.
Fuel pump replacement isn't cheap, about $700-$1000.
