Question about 2002 Land Rover Discovery Series II
It happened to me also once, I supposed that this started because I used jumper cables to start another car. I changed the battery and problem solved. Hope that works for you... Good Luck

If low voltage is not the problem another possibility is the XYZ switch on the left side of the auto box is faulty. This tells the electronic management system what gear you are in and sometimes 2 gear positions are indicated at the same time (I think). The ecu goes into limp mode as you have described. Removing and refurbishing or replacing the switch can fix this. Care needs to be taken when repositioning it so that the correct signals are passed along to the ecu. The switch goes faulty because water from the aircon drain drops straight onto the switch in a wonderful example of L/R design. The fix is to shove a piece of hose up the aircon drain to bypass the switch and end the cause of the corrosion in the switch. Sometimes the problem can be overcome by stopping and holding the mode switch on while starting. Then depressing the switch again so that both the M and S lights go out. It has not fixed the underlying problem, though, which will need fixing.
