For the 1998 Ford Escort 2.0L SOHC In-Line 4-Cylinders:
Click on the following free direct Link. It has several Serpentine Belt Diagrams for the 1998 Ford Escort depending on your engine options (AC/No AC etc.). It also has several other Instructional and Directional Diagrams that will help you.
you can't set timing on that engine. No distributor. Timing is controlled by computer. If it is throwing a timing retarded code, then your timing belt needs replaced because your cam to crank timing is off.
This is catastrophic for the engine and there will be damage beyond the inevitable bent valves. This is the cost of poor preventative maintenance. Rebuilding the engine will be expensive as will installing a replacement unit. Get some quotes but I suggest it's probably not worth it given the market value of the vehicle.
Hello pamgolmon: My name is Roger and i will answer your question. The 2-0 dual cam engine is a interference engine. This means if the engine jumps time at the timing belt. It will bend the valves. As for the timing marks on the camshafts. Their are no marks to be located. To set the timing marks on this engine requires special tools. This makes it expensive for not only the do it yourself mechanic but also the repair shops also. If the valves were bent you must pull the head for the repairs also.

There is a belt diagram on the emission sticker under the hood, if it is not there I suggest you get an Escort repair manual. I have searched the Web and am unable to come up with qa diagram of the belt.
