Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

Have a 1996 explorer sport with 200k. Daughter said the truck started to drive "like a boat tossing and turning" at highway speed. Front end was rebuilt not long ago. shocks seems fine and front to rear bounce is fine. Does not pitch and there's no leaning or sag. Everything apears level. However when driving the truck feels like its want to roll over. When stopped I stood on the rear bumper and could rock the vehicle side to side significantly. Like a boat in the water. There was a slight click -pop noise as the vehicle rocked to the right, which came from the right rear area. Everything looks attached under the body. perhaps the rear sway bar links or bushing are starting to go ? Does the entire sway bar need replacing or can I just replace the right and left side links and attached bushings ?

Yes this sounds like A sway bar condition and yes you can Replace just the links and bushings. I would not replace the sway bar its self unless that is infact what broke. I hope this helps you out. i would appreciate it if you would rate me.
thank you

Engine speed is determined from crank or cam sensor. You most likely have a cluster issue.

1996 explorer what gear do u drive in and?do u supposed 2 cut the overdrive off when?just regularly driving

OVERDRIVE is fine in most driving. if you tow a trailler or pulling long hills take out of overdrive. otherwise the vehicle will handle when to shift.

Automatic transmission slipping when in overdrive but strong in drive 3

these trucks came with a 700 r4 transmission an the overdrive gear is considerably smaller than the first 3 gears which allows it to run at a much lower rpm at highway speeds but unfortuneatly this gear also can burn up really easy, most commen causes for it burning out would be from towing cars boats etc in overdrive

Vibration in front end of car that increase's with speed of car

At what speed does it start? If it starts at a low speed (for example 20mph or so) then its most likely a tire that is out of round. If it starts at highway speeds it's probably an out of balance tire or a rim that is slightly bent.
