Question about 1990 Audi V8 Quattro

1 Answer

My 1998 Audi A6 has a problem starting again after I have had it running and the engine is warm. It cranks but won't start. I brought it to have it fixed and they replaced the spark plugs (which were soaked with gas) and the wires. They cleaned the fuel injectors and and a fuel hose, but it still does this, of course not every time. The last time it stalled when I was moving and it had a hard time starting again. I had just replaced some stuff from an overheating problem 6 mths prior. Another site suggested the cel or ect sensor. I will have those checked. Any other ideas? Thanks ~ Linda

You should have it scanned for fault codes to narrow down cause rather than replacing parts at random

SOURCE: I brought a car audi

the radio is in security mode and requires a 4 digit code to release the radio back into operation. the code is usually inside the owners manual on a preforated type card. maybe first couple pages. (if the manual is still even in there) or maybe previous owner has written it down in manual somewhere. if not then the dealer may have to extract it through their scanner. may cost $$. the 4 digit code will start with 1 or 0 if you happen to find code, reply back to me and ill help you enter it, may be in manual as well. hope this helps

SOURCE: I BROUGHT A AUDI 2000 A6 4.2 SAFE RADIO

Turn on radio - the word SAFE will appear in the display. Press th P.SCAN and RBDS buttons simultaneously and hold them down until "1000" lights up in the display.Release buttons.Do not, under no circumtances, continue holding them down or press them once again. This will cause the radio to consider the number 1000 to be the input code.Use station buttons 1,2,3,and 4 to enter the code number on your Radio Card. Use the button 1 to enter the first number 2 for the second number 3 for the third number and 4 for the last number.Once you have entered the code and it shows on the display, press the P.SCAN and RBDS buttons down again simultaneously and hold them down until the word SAFE appears in the display.Release buttons. Soon afterwards a frequency will be displayed.

SOURCE: 1995 AUDI 90 CS - Hard to start... spark & fuel OK

Have you tried replacing the starter? I know starters can go bad if the car is not started or run for a long time.

I am getting the same car, with the same issue.. it sat for 2 yrs and won't start.

My mechanic told me it is probably a starter.

complicated what ever kind of scanner they use must have triggered something in the theft deterrent system, my only advice is to have it checked at a audi dealer or some one with the right diagnostic capabilities.

I have an Audi A6 2.7T that has an intermittent starting problem. what is the answer?

Does the engine crank over and not run or is there just a clicking noise when you turn the key? If it just has one click it is probably the starter. If it cranks but does not run, need to check the fuel pressure or test for spark at plugs.

Under bonnet on the right side of the car face to windscreen you will find the fuse box / relay plate - engine bay. Here is placed the Data Link Connector (DLC) for Audi A6 Quattro 1997.

Coolent system fault symbol Audi A6

1998 Audi A6 2.8

It could be that the thermostat is stuck in the open position thus providing maximum coolant flow through the engine when the engine is still cold, ie from a cold start. (The thermo should close when the engine is stopped and cold and it opens up once the coolant temp increases and the engine has been running for a few minutes.) Once the engine is hot maximum coolant flow between engine and radiator is normal.

Do you also find that your heater takes a while to provide warm air to the cabin in winter when you notice this condition?

If you do not know when the thermostat was last changed then I would suggest you change it. ( If it malfunctions and sticks in the closed position you will really have a problem). The radiator/engine coolant could no doubt do with a flush and change in any event as it should be done every 2 years. If you don't know when it was last done - do it. Cooling systems tend to be a neglected part of essential vehicle maintenance.

Starter switch. Plastic and cheap, my 98 A6 did the same thing... I replaced thousands in parts, turned out to be a cracked ignition switch which is a very common Audi problem!
