I unplugged my battery and I can hear something ticking fast, when I pull out fuses under the hood (main fuses) noises change..

could be the solenoid on the starter motor clicking, or sometimes there is just enough battery power to put lights on but higher drain items just click on & off trying to cut in, test the battery output voltage should be at least 12v to start, a fully charged battery will be 13.5v, under 12v is no good.

New battery drains.

I can't imagine how changing the belt would have any effect on the electrical system if the alternator is working.
The way you check for a drain is to disconnect the battery ground cable and use a test light to make the connection between the battery and ground. If there is something drawing power from the battery the light will glow.
Then you pull each fuse from the fuse boxes until the light goes out. You also disconnect the starter and alternator if necessary.

when you said you checked battery did you make sure battery cables and battery terminals are clean? if not dissconnect battery and clean both positive and negative cables and terminals with either hard bristle brush or scotch guard. remember you will not have a solid connection if battery terminals or cables are corroded.

Had a car just like yours, but mine was a 96. Take a hammer and wap the starter. Sometimes the starter will stick. Mine did. Hope this helps

96 pontiac battery drains itself

Sounds like it IS the alternator. Batteries sometimes have a bit of a life of their own after sitting for awhile and will start a car. Once running, it will continue until the battery charge dies completely...especially when not using radio, A/C, lights etc... Also, it could be an alternator belt, (or surpentine belt) too lose on the alternator. Finally, check the battery for water level. If it is the type that requires water, sometimes people forget to fill it when sold.

it is a bad idea to disconnect the battery of a running car. If the alternator is working it can destroy virtually any electric component that is on. Alot of shops and some auto parts stores offer free charging/starting system tests.(they sell more baterries and alternators)

96 Continental radio, no audio

I have the SAME EXACT problem. I thought it was the radio - bought another - went to change the units - heard an electrical arc - now the car cranks but doesn't start and the new radio doesn't work either!!! (not that it matters anyway)
Is there an electrical problem with '96 Lincoln's. Where should I start to diagnose the non-starting issue?

I just relaced the alternator, belt and battery and it started up fine, then the next day, car still didn't start. Could it be that I need to know where the automatic fuel cut off switch is in my 1996...

this is normally in the trunk but also do you have air ride? if you do then check the air suspension sensor cause if this is bad it can drain the battery because the car is trying to lift up and it puts a drain on the battery but as I said on the phone get marine battery ends and some round loop take the ends off your battery and put these on and all you have to do is just disconnect them at night until you get it fixed this is what I have done to mine
