Question about 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

Transmission seems to be 'slipping'. is there an easy fix? For example, does the car use transmission fluid? Is it even worth a new transmission? 88,000 miles on this thing now.

Yes it uses transmission fluid. be sure to check the level, IF it is really low, put it in slowly, stop and go in and step on the brake and go through the gears to circulate it. If it is not low, i would replace the filter at least to see if it is clogged.

2005 chevy impala.. transmission slipping or something. this car has about 193,000 miles on it.. im wondering why its slipping (transmission) and if its even worth fixing...???

HI,
First, verify the transmission fluid level is correct - look in the Owner's Manual for info. 2nd get a transmission fluid replacement - do NOT do a 'chemical flush' it could make it even worse....just have them drain out ALL the old fluid and put in new fluid. Shouldn't cost more than $100. If you have any Check Engine Lights or other unusual lights on, get those checked out, too.

Per KBB.com car is worth about $2500 if you sell it yourself; dealer might give your $1500 but only $500 w/a bad transmission. A rebuilt transmission would likely cost $2000....do NOT fix it. 193K miles is a lot on any car especially an Impala. Time a for another car.

ALSO SMELL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. BE SURE TO SMELL FRESH FLUID SO YOU GET AN IDEA OF HOW THE FLUID SMELLS. IF IT IS DARK LIKE DINGY AND SMELLS COOKED THEN MY FRIEND IT IS TIME FOR A NEW ONE

I would change out the transmission fluid and put some transmission additives in there, see how the transmission shifts after that. Worse case have the transmission rebuilt.

The struts are about $150 apiece plus labor. If the car runs fine besides those two problems I would fix it and keep it, it's alot cheaper than a car payment.

My 93 accord shifts erratically. it drops rpm and seems like the transmission is slipping

First off, did you happen to change the fluid lately and use anything but Honda ATF-Z1. If you did that is your problem. You must use genuine Honda ATF-Z1 or shifting problems will result. Even if you did not use a non Honda fluid, I suggest you have the fluid changed and the transmission flushed. You may end up needing a transmission rebuild but it is worth trying a fluid/filter change first.

Sorry this is not an easy fix the clutch packs in the transmission are slipping, usually caused by wear, but the hydraulic pump is probably getting week. As the oil warms up the oil gets thinner and the hydraulic pressure decreases. Times for a overhaul of the transmission, and if the torque converter can not be flushed a new torque converter is recommended. You may get lucky buy changing the fluid several times, but if the transmission is 22 years old it may not help.
