Question about 1999 Chevrolet Blazer

4 wheel drive wont swich back to 2 wheel drive

Car is stuck in 4 wd low, top speeed of 15 mph. when i push buttons on dash i can hear switching noises under dash behind glovebox and somewhere in the engine compartmentbut it remainsin 4wd low.

    My Blazer wont switch from 2 wheel drive to eihter 4 wheel mode,i can hear clicking from left side of dash,could this be the same problem???

    blazer put itself into 4 lo and would not switch back into 2 wd.

After reading some of the fixes here and on other forums,i bought a vacuum actuator and a transfer case switch.My mechanic came to fit these today,replaced the actuator and it didnt do anything.Turned out the old one was o.k..He couldnt find where the case switch went ,so he started tracing the vacuum pipes.
Guess what? he found not one ,but two broken pipes.he replaced/shortened these and hey presto,i now have 2,4 hi,4low and auto all working again.
It may be worth checking the vacumm pipes before buying other parts.
Just a thought...........

    It will go in 4 wheel just fine. Then when i try to put it back in 2 wheel it wont go in . But sometime if i drive it a while and it is warm it will pop back in 2 wheel drive. I dont understand this atall.

For a temporary fix so the car can drive, remove the fuse for the four wheel drive. it won't actuate the four wheel. The car is always in 2wheel drive. the fuse is located under the hood, the very right side of the of the fuse box, the third fuse up from the bottom. This can be checked in the owners manual. When I need four wheel dr I place the fuse back in. I haven't fixed the problem yet but can drive it 2wheel on the road. think it is the control module for the four wheel dr located under the dash board behind the glove box. Dealer part for $450, I would rather install and remove a 10cent fuse

Ok here i go my 2000 Z71 4X4 you can hear all the clicking when pushing all the 4x4wheel drive buttons seams to be working fine but service engine light comes on. the code comes up on the machine shifter selinoide.the trans has been pumped out and has new filter twice and new fluid .and still does the same thing but when changed the fluid and filter the first 2 times changing it would work fine. but then mess right back up. but seems like its stuck in 2nd or third gear when trying to take of in drive the normal way sounds like its lugging like the front end half locked or something .but pull the shifter in low or 2nd it takes off fine but want shift in to drive and overdrive kickitwayback@yahoo.com thank for any help on this

This sounds like the auto locking hubs have gone out. They will sometimes make a ratcheting noise and then seize up. This time of year especially with the colder weather they will lock up when the grease gets old and hardens. The best thing to do is to replace them with a nice set of Warn manual lock-out hubs. There are some special sockets you will need to do this repair so it might be best to take this one to a shop.

1999suburban won't switchfrom 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive when pushing auto dash buttons


Try it while backing a straight line. This was how the old manual hubs released. The autolock hubs may be worn just enough to hang up and not relaease as they should. Backing up will give that extra nudge.

When drivingtruck in 2 wheel drive the 4 wheel low light will flash and when slow truck down to a stop it will shift into 4 wheel low and will not go back to 2 wheel high


Sometimes the solenoids will stick on the axle neither in 2 or 4 wheel drive, if this problem started when you weren't shifting between two and four wheel drive it is probably the push button switch cluster on your dash going bad

4wd how to enguage


make sure your in nutural, or park then if you have hub locks turn them to locking position. then shift small shifter if available into 4 wheel low or high. or may have just a push button to engauge. then shift into low or high. then you may use your regular stick to shift or just shift into drive w automatic.

Trannie, no drive no od,no 2 will go in r low 1


if you drove it too far too fast in 4 wheel low. you could have done some serious damage to the trani. i have the same truck in a 1998 and the tachomiter goes nuts at 15 mph in 4 low. it was never meant to drive for any distance in 4 low. if your lucky. when your rearend went it didn't take out your drive shaft. if your not lucky. your drive shaft took some punishment and in turn damaged the trani.

Have you tried this: put it in nuetral and push on the brake! Then as your doing these things push the 2 wd button!

I'M NOT COMPLETELY SURE BUT WITH MY EXPERIENCE SHORT OF DAMAGED MECHANICAL PARTS (INTERNAL WORKINGS OF THE TRANSFER CASE) IT COULD BE ONE OF THREE THINGS FIRST TRY TO DRIVE THE TRUCK IN REVERSE 35 OR 40 FEET WITH SWITCH IN 2 WD THIS MAY UNBIND SYSTEM AND POP IT OUT OF LOW IF THAT DOESN'T WORK CHECK FLUID LEVEL MOST LIKELY ITS ATF FLUID BUT CHECK YOUR MANUAL SHOULD BE TWO LARGE BRASS BOLTS ON REAR OF TRANSFER CASE REMOVE TOP BOLT FLUID SHOULD BE LEVEL WITH THOSE BOLT THREADS AND LASTLY IT COULD VERY WELL BE THE ACTUATOR MOTOR ON THE TRANSFER CASE
