Question about 1997 Ford F150 Regular Cab

1 Answer

Ford f150 what causes poor fuel mileage.this is a small block V6 in a full size pickup. Empty I expect that small 6 cylinder to get super good gas mileage loaded not so good. It stumbles all the time, I haven't done much to it yet except get it serviced at a ford garage in SouthHaven Mi. It still gets 20% less then the mechanic told me it would empty. I can understand if I fill the box up with wood or something real heavy the fuel mileage will drop because its working, but empty a V6 should in 1997 get around 20mpg in a wt truck and a car weighing the same 25 mpg's PLUS. So once again why am I getting such poor fuel mileage.

Many of the problems sound as if the DFC sensor is not working it should put ouy about 1.5 amps when running ok. The item is small and I got one the Part source for $103 plus tax on sale. today apparently ford have a lot of stock on this item. the PU runs as new no more shuttering at about 80 kmh going up a hill. electrical shop find.
    Thanks Dave

I have a 1998 F150 with eh same issue. My mileage has been decreasing now down to around 14 mpg. It is a V6 and I also expect around 20 mpg. No check engine light and just changed air filter. No improvement.

Engine runs fine. no codes but mileage is poor.

I had a 98 Ford Explorer. It was a pig on gas since I bought it, and it was only 2. I kept this truck for 6 years and when I got rid of it and bought a full sized chevy, I thought about how much fuel I wasted in the past. This 2000 chevy 4x4 got double the mileage. I'd suggest selling it.

Hi

As far as the review says the mileage should not falter since it is new as you said. However

These are the causes of a poor mileage in a car:-

Poorly Inflated Car Tires

Car tires that are improperly inflated create significant road resistance and drag on a moving car. A car engine has to work harder to propel a car forward due to this increased tire/road resistance. This resistance chips away at a car's gas mileage.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter impedes air flow into a car's engine, a process that disrupts normal engine combustion and makes it less efficient. This causes a reduction in both engine performance and gas mileage.

Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are responsible for igniting a car's air/fuel mixture, an event that causes a mini explosion inside a car's engine cylinders. Bad or dysfunctional spark plugs don't fire, or ignite, properly; thus, they affect engine combustion negatively, which in turn negatively affects gas mileage.

Bad Oxygen Sensors

For a car to be at its most fuel efficient, its oxygen sensors, small and electronically operated, automatically adjust a car's air/fuel mixture and have to be functioning properly. Bad oxygen sensors cause abnormal air/fuel mixture ratios, a condition that results in poor gas mileage and poor vehicle performance.

Leaky Fuel Injectors

A car's fuel injection system is responsible for injecting precise amounts of fuel into a car's engine cylinders, where it is combined with air and ignited. For a car to perform properly, a specific amount of fuel has to be injected by each fuel injector into each engine cylinder. A leaky fuel injector wastes fuel by leaking it outside the engine and reducing the amount of fuel that makes it into the engine. This results in wasted fuel and reduced gas mileage.
It is suggested to start with a code scanner to find out if there are any stored fault codes in your car.

I have a 1994 Ford F150 XLT with duel fuel tanks! I have a full tank in the front tank, but when hit the switch for that tank, the truck goes dead! What is the cause of this?

common on older high mileage fors to either have the switch go out or the intank pump go bad, you cang ground terminal 6 on the underhood diag plug with key on engine off and switch from front to rear or vice versa and listen for fuel pumps to be running, likely one is not

Obviously, 1. the air filter, Don't clean it, replace it if it has not be replaced lately.
2. The fuel injectors, have them cleaned and calibrated.
3. Fuel pressure in the fuel rails, have it tested for too high pressure
4. Air flow sensor...test
5. Download and analize fault codes from ECM.
Other engine sensors such as the O2 sensors may be involved and should show up in the OBD (diagnostics)

You might try replacing the thermostat. Hows the heater work? That will give you a clue. A stuck or defective thermostat will cause poor fuel mileage and poor heater performance. This vehicle needs a
192-195 degree thermostat to operate correctly.

your milage won't get much better than around 20 mpg at the best of times but you may have a partially plugged resignater or catalytic converter.you can check these with a digital thermomiter by checking temps. in and out of these, they should be close to the same.

POOR GAS MILEAGE

Have you changed the fuel filter? I know it sounds weird but a plugged filter will make a truck use more gas. The computer tries to compensate for less fuel by commanding the injectors to open longer. Also a plugged filter will cause excess back pressure on the fuel pump making it loud.. Good Luck.

Ford 150 gas mileage issues

Your O2 sensors may be freaking out. The O2 sensors tell the ECM how much fuel to send through the injectors. When the O2 sensors quit working right, the ECM has no idea what to do with the fuel. Do a fuel pressure test as well. If the pressure regulator is working correctly, it'll go through alot of fuel as well. You should be at 40 psi. When running you should be at 37 psi.
