The starter solenoid is on the starter itself.

Pontiac g6 won't start not the battery could it be the starter makes no noise when key is turned?

The ignition switch sends voltage to the starter solenoid, if no neutral or brake switch is involved. It is sometimes located ON the starter. It activates a high-current switch that engages the starter. If you don't hear a click, the solenoid could be bad. Since the high current can damage the contacts, you could still hear a click and not get the starter to spin. Sometimes hitting the solenoid, or starter lightly with a wrench or hammer will realign the contacts and you can get another spin from the starter. Hitting the exposed contact on the cable that goes straight from the battery to the solenoid can cause a spark, or explode the battery.

So, the ignition switch, battery, starter, starter solenoid, a fuse, a neutral switch, brake switch, or wiring can be the cause of a starter not engaging.

How do I test the starter solenoid?

Test the starter solenoid by connecting a jumper cable to the battery side of the solenoid. The solenoid has two large posts and two small posts. A single large post is located on either side of the solenoid. Attach the alligator clip of the jumper cable to the large post on the battery side of the solenoid. Touch the opposite end of the jumper cable to the large post on the other side of the solenoid. If the starter turns the engine normally, the problem likely lies with an ignition override switch, such as a clutch start switch or a neutral safety switch. If the starter produces a buzzing sound, the starter is likely defective. If there is no response at all, the solenoid is defective and must be replaced.

Location for the starter motor relay 94 e320

The solenoid is part of the starter. If starter wont turn its the Neutral safety switch, solenoid, or ignition switch. Try to start in neutral, if it works its the switch, if it wont may still be the switch on the transmission.

My f-150 it will not turn over battery is good but not geting voltaeg to starter help

Use a test light and check at the starter solenoid and see if the ignition start wire gets hot when the key is turned to start. If it does check to see if current then goes thru the solenoid to the starter. If it does check to see if current gets to the starter, if it gets to the starter the starter is bad. If no current to the starter or out of solenoid the solenoid is bad. If current does not get to the solenoid when switch is turned, check and see if the current goes thru the neutral safety switch (Clutch switch if not automatic). If the current doesn't go thru the switch replace the switch. If you are not getting current to the switch in the first place check the ignition switch. If the current doesn't come from the ignition switch to the safety switch replace the ignition switch.

The starter solenoid is connected to the starter. You will have to remove the starter and the solenoid the housing that the wiring is connected to. Good luck

1981 Corvette will not start

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.

Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.
