Question about 2000 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

Does the water pump have to be replaced with the timing belt?

1. I realized my Mazda Protege 2000 never had the timing belt replaced (at 95,000 miles now) and have an appointment this Saturday for the service. Another mechanic told me that I need to have the water pump replaced at the same time. He says since they have to take the engine apart anyway it's the best to have it done. Also, with this car it seems once the timing belt is replaced the water pump will go out shortly as well.
Is that true? What is the reasonable price for both replacements?

2. For the last two years I am hearing a "chirping/cricket" sound (for lack of better description) coming from the front of my car. It's getting louder and no one seems to be able to tell me what it is. Every mechanic immediately points to the belts, but everything that can be done with belts has been done. The Mazda dealership heard the sound but when they took the car in the shop and opened to hood the sound stopped. It's only when I drive a consistant speed. It stops when I speed up or slow down. They thought it could be the bearings but weren't sure. They won't do anything unless they are sure what it is. Any idea?

Thanks,

Karin

Teh resaon he wants to replace your water pump is because it runs off of your timing belt.and if it should fail later down the road after belt replacement.then you will be looking at another big expense having the same job done twice.i would rcomend you do get the waterpump replaced also.as for you other problem im not sure. samboiv

How do you replace the water pump on a 1992 Mazda Protege?

Hi:

The water pump is driven by the timing belt, which is on the passenger side of your engine. You would need to remvoe all belts, and then the timing belt cover, and the timing belt to change your water pump.

Mazda 323 Fan Belt Noise

I have the same problem with my daughters '99 Protege es 1.8. I have replaced the belt no less than 7 times in 30k miles. It's been towed 3 of those times. Twice on rainy nights I have done road side service. Always the alternator belt. I have replaced the alternator and the water pump because I was told they may be locking up intermittently. The only thing that really made a improvement was pulling the crank pulley and sandblasting it. The rough surface drives the belt better. I got the idea from the alt. rebuild place I use, They sand blast the pulleys when they do their rebuilds. Now I get a note about every 2000 miles,"Dad my belt is singing again" and I grab the sockets and snug it up again. And yes I keep a new one in the trunk at all times. Lots of luck, CB

How much should I reasonably pay to replace the Timing belt in my 2002 Mazda Protege 5?

replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.
