To get an accurate voltage reading on the alternator, measure across the battery while the engine is running at 3000RPM. It should read between 13.5 and 14.5. If it's low then shut the car off and look on the back of the alternator for a large red wire ( it should be on a terminal marked B+) and make sure the terminal is clean and shiny with no trace of green gunk (corrosion). Clean up the small blue wire too. Do the same with both battery cables. Check the tension on the drive belt. It should only move about 1/2 inch when you push down on it. Retest for voltage. If it's still low then you have probably damaged the alternator when you unhooked the battery. NEVER unhook the battery cables on a VW when it's running. Hope this helps.

Ignition clicks but doesn't turn over

If you just replaced the battery then my guess is that you have a bad alternator. Your fresh battery could hold the charge for a couple days without being charged but now it's dead. Try charging the battery (via jumper cables or a battery charger). If the car starts up after the charge then you probably need a new alternator. You can verify this by checking the voltage across the battery after you start the car. The voltage should be more than 13.5 volts, if it's any less than the alternator isn't charging the battery. Good luck!

Put new altanator on new batery in still not .chrageing nothing works like it shound. is there a fuse or something to replace

start car and then take a battery lead off and if the engine stops the alternator isnt chargine ,if so then check for power to the big lead if no power then check the power distribution box ,if need be rune a wire from the + battery terminal to the big lead on the alternator and try that ,if power to the big terminal and no charge as stated then take the alternator off and get a genuine bosch factory exchange unit ,yes i know its not cheep but at least it will work

Battery will not charge, first time its ever did this. rebuilt alternator new battery and new starter not to sure if new starter has anything to do with battery chargin but replaced it anyway, has good...

A bad voltage regulator could cause the problem. Assuming the alternator is working correctly. Jump the vehicle with the battery disconnected and then disconnect the jumper cables. If the vehicle dies your voltage regulator or Alternator are bad, some vehicle have separate regulators from the alternator, if it continues to run the alternator is good but the voltage regulator is probably the cause.

Battery is being drained when car is off

The problem sounds like either theres a dead short somewhere or something electrical is staying on and constantly drawing power from the battery. Start at the battery cables, look for any signs of damaged or burnt insulation or even excessive oxidation around the terminals and connectors. Walk around the car, under the hood, inside the car and trunk and listen for any sounds, with the car off and no keys in the ignition, everything turned off. Sometimes you can get lucky and you can hear something running when it shouldnt be. Another question, does the car have any aftermarket add-ons? Stereo, alarm, remote start?
