This means that you have a small leak somewhere and your brake fluid is leaking and also picking up air at the same time look behind every wheel for leaks also along the frame look at all the lines.once you find and fix the leak you will have to bleed the air out of the lines.to do this you will need help. but if you find no leak anywhere it will be a bad master cylinder for your brakes.

Are there vacuum hose on the brakes hydraulic system?


NO. the vacuum is used to make the brake pedal easy to push, power brakes. the pedal would be hard without vacuum, that is why the pedal gets hard with the key off and engine not running. the problem you are having is more of a hydraulic problem.
Have the brakes checked asap. the brake system may have a leak causing the pedal to go low. check the fluid level and if it is low or empty then there is a problem, could be a rotted brake line leaking or a wheel cylinder leaking.

I have a 1994 bonneville that you have to push brake pedal to floor and fluid empties within 1 day. Is it the master cylinder or the line?


check all brake lines and wheel cylinders for leakage. if no leaks its probably the master cylinder. symtoms are-- pedal will sink to floor when stopping or not. or master cylinder leaks from behind "it", and runs down brake booster. if booster goes bad the pedal will be very hard! good-day !

I have installed new front and back brakes,new calipers,brake lines,and now thanks to bad advice a new master cylinder and my pedal still goes to the floor.we have bled the lines many times and tried to...


Have the engine running & bleed the brakes again

Have someone in the vehicle slowly push the brake
pedal,never pump.

When you are driving, do you pump your brakes,NO

Pushing the brake pedal only moves the piston in the
brake cylinder about 1",that is all
That amount of movement will build up to 2,000 lbs
of pressure. So no pumping,does nothing

As the person is pushing the pedal down,someone
else opens & then closes the bleeder valves while the
pedal is still going down.

Then you wait on the person in the car to start over.
Real simple.

Assuming you paid for all that work,why do you have
issues that you didn't have before.

Don't want to discuss what the pros do,but we have
a thousand people on this site every day with problems
that they shouldn't have and are lighter in the wallet

When i push down on the brake pedal air leaks out around the rod and the pedal goes to the floor.


Check the vacuum line on the power brake booster, the diaphram may be pushing the air down the rod, the break booster may be defective all together if the vacuum line is intact.

What are the proper steps to bleeding your brakes on a 1990 vw golf deisel


For left hand drive vehicles: (If the car does not have ABS system you do not need any diagnostic equipment!)

IMPORTANT NOTE: You need using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car in order to bleed the ABS block. Follow instructions by scantool equipment for bleeding the ABS block.


1. This bleeding procedure requires two people. Remove the brake system reservoir cap, and fill up with new brake fluid until "MAX" level is reached.
2. Lift the car, or use a channel for access under vehicle.
3. Put the gearbox in "N" - Neutral position, or in "P" - Parking position for automatic transmission.
4. Start the engine and push the brake pedal firmly for 4 - 5 times to the floor, and maintain the brake pedal pushed to the floor.
5. Begin with the rear right wheel. Another person remove the dust cap and loose the brake caliper bleeding screw until the brake pedal goes to the floor. At this moment maintain the brake pedal pushed to the floor, engine idling, and tight the brake caliper bleeding screw. Use a plastic hose: one end connected to the brake caliper bleeding screw, and another end inside a recovery bottle for used brake fluid.
6. Repeat steps no.#4 and no.#5 until no air flows through the brake caliper bleeding screw. Tight the brake caliper bleeding screw, and put the dust cap in their place.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All the time check the brake fluid level in the brake system reservoir, and fill up if necessary!

7. Push the brake pedal firmly for 4 - 5 times to the floor, and maintain the brake pedal pushed to the floor, engine idling.

16. Now the brakes are bleeded. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. Fill up with new brake fluid until "MAX" level is reached. Put back the brake reservoir cap.
17. Test the car brake system. The brake pedal movement no more than 1/3 of total stroke until the floor, when brake pedal is applied. Maximum admissible is 1/2 of total stroke.

My wife pushed the brake pedal down hard and now the brakes are spongy and the pedal goes down to the floor


chances are the seal inside the master cylinder is blown (check for leaks before buying bits......)

Try checking if you have brake fluid . If you do then it is the master cylinder .
