Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

My check engine light came on today but I live in bush alaska... not a lot of options for getting it checked... all the liquid levels are fine, wondering if I need to change the oil filter more frequently in the cold cold weather we live in though.

A check engine light is going to be a problem the computer detects. The reason they have check engine lights is because without them you could spend days trying to figure out the problem. You can buy a cheap code reader online that will do the job. Most of the time it is a sensor or misfire code.

Last night I saw a light saying check engine could you explain the problem ,that>s all it says it was working fine all of a sudden that just came on also I am seeing water leaking from some where...

The check engine light may be from a low coolant condition. the green fluid inside the car is probably from the heater core that is leaking. so you should check the coolant level and you will have to verify the leak.

The oil light came on today when i started my 2003 xterra

The oil light comes on when there is no pressure. There is no pressure when the pump either cannot get oil to pump or has oil and will not pump it.

Get it checked before you do anything else. A engine running with no pressure is a cooked engine.

No heat

First check if there is air in the cooling line or cooling liquid leak or level of cooling liquid too low

Check if the engine thermostat works fine.

Check the waterpump

Check if the heater radiator is not jammed.

Rattle under the front end?

The rattle may be stabilizer link rod bushings or a strut mount loosening up as for the engine light you must hook up a code reader to determine the problem otherwise you may be replacing parts blindly.

Engine light came on

if it's the check engine light... and you live in the states drop in to autozone they will scan it for free and let you know what the codes mean. as far as more antifreeze.... when the motor is cool... fill the resevoir to the maximum mark .... and then it's fine... keep an eye on it to make sure it stays at that level... top it up if needed

No mechanics in town to help

change your alternator out this is the first indicator of worn alternator or a bad replaced alternator
all warning lights means that alternator is not putting out power and vehicle will run ruff with low power since everything is controled by the power of the alternator
since your in alaska i recomend a new alternator not a replacement refurbished these dont tend to weery the weather very well up there and make sure when you order your alternator that you want to make sure its not a refurbish and that it can take the elements you might need a 16 volt alternator
