Question about Hyundai Motor 2004 Sonata

3 Answers

It starts fine except at the last 7 fill ups. When I put gas in the car, it is hard to start-it takes 4 tries. 1st try doesn't do anything; 2nd try it tries to start; 3rd try it starts & dies; 4th try it starts right off but have to have feet on gas & brake & get it moving. Once it is moving it is fine. Replaced the fuel pump after the 5th fill up. Didn't do anything. I changed the gas lid. Started up fine at that. Next time filled up it was same thing. I travel at long distances so have to fill up 2 or 3 times on most trips. Any ideas. 2004 Hyundai Sonata V6

A mechanic changed the fuel pump

  • Martha Nov 15, 2010

A mechanic changed the fuel pump & didn't have to remove tank. I put STP fuel injector cleaner in it before the last 2 fill-ups. The gas come from various stations from LA to AL to OH & today back in LA. The problem can't be because of engine being cold because it's always hot when fill up the car. The car starts fine whether cold or hot except when I fill up with gas. I need more ideas than the above ones you gave.

  • Martha Nov 16, 2010

I am ordering the purge valve. When I get it replaced I'll let you know if it takes care of the problem. Thanks for you help.

I told you I would let you know if the purge valve took care of the starting problem after putting fuel in my car. I ordered the purge valve and installed it on Thanksgiving eve. I then filled up the car. . WOW! IT STARTED OK. Thank you for your help.

Hello .
I believe you have a canister purge valve that is stuck open.
This valve controls the flow of fuel vapors out of the carbon canister.
Normally the purge valve only opens when you are underway with the engine running.
If the valve sticks open all the vapor from the fill up is entering the engine and flooding it.
The purge valve is mounted on the engine at the back side near the firewall.
Also...NEVER overfill the fuel tank. Gasoline can enter the carbon canister and saturate the carbon. If the canister is saturated in gasoline it will need to be replaced.
This should fix your issue.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Sorry I did not fully explain. The carbon canister is located under the vehicle, usually close to the fuel tank, and is full of carbon pieces that are capable of storing fuel vapors. When filling your car the vapors are directed through it to be burned later. The valve you need is designed to open only after the vehicle is on the road under certain driving conditions. If this valve remains open the vapors are drawn directly to the engine intake and flood the engine.

  • FUBAR Nov 16, 2010

Another thing....the canister is not capable of liquid gasoline, only vapors. So if the fuel tank is overfilled there is a risk that raw fuel will get into the canister and ruin it.
Fill your vehicle only to the point that the auto shut off on the fill nozzle kicks off, then round it to the next dollar only

OK. I am confident this will fix your problem. Seen it happen on other makes of cars as well.

Did you drain the gas tank when you changed the fuel pump? I would try putting some fuel injector cleaner but first try some iso-heet. Also try running some premium in it.It sounds like there may be some issue with the gas. Also I would consider replacing the ISC valve also known as idle air control valve. This valve sticks open and the engine idle will run high for the first minute or two because the engine is cold.
Thank you,
Lee

The problem is the charcoal filter. This is a very common problem on the Hyundai. The charcoal filter is located down behind the drivers side tire, up in the fender well. The fuel tank is not venting properly. This charcoal filter will need to be replaced.

Have read this twice and based on what you have indicated I think that maybe you have an intermittently operating fuel pump - sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. And while you are it, U might just want to check to make sure that the pump is always being energized -see if there is a loose connection somewhere that could result in the pump not running at times. If you have access to a voltmeter have your husband hook it up to the hot line and a good ground and have the meter in the car next to you. The moment you turn the ignition on the meter must register 12 volts or more. And once on, there is no cutting off - it stays at 12 volts at all times and any excess fuel pumped is returned back to the gas tank. Good luck.

I have a hard time starting my 04 Santa Fe after i fill up

it was running then you removed the gas cap to fill ( extremely dangerous practice with car running)
that indicates that there is a problem with the EVAP system.
run the fault codes ( what the dealers should have done first ) and check for the EVAP codes , purge vent or solenoid problems

I have a hard time starting my 04 Santa Fe after i fill up

The most common cause of this is thermal shock (gasoline is very cold out of the ground) to the electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank, when the pumps get worn the decrease in temperature from the gasoline causes the pump to stick. This is a question I see fairly often, so I did research to see what the common cause is. Next time this happens have the fuel pressure checked.

Most likely the second gear section of the transmission has gone bad. There are 3 or 4 different gear sections or assemblies in an automatic transmission, when they go bad, they go bad.

If you put injector cleaner in there after you put the new injectors in you could have ruined them, maybe not but this sometimes happens. Also check the plugs and see what color they are.
