If you change the fluid and filter 4 to 5 quarts. if the whole transmission is drained it takes 14 to 15 quarts.

I have a 89 ford f350 7.3 litre diesel truck and it shifts hard..the transmission is a automatic. what could be wrong with it?

Hello coffeyjoh791, first make sure the transmission isn't low on fluid, if you are certain that it isn't low on fluid you may be wise to have the fluid and filter changed in the transmission.
God luck my friend!

My 1997 ford explorer overheated and the transmission slipped

Tranny fluid may have been contaminated with coolant since tranny cooler lines go to radiator or condensor.
I would fix your leak on radiator, then completely drain tranny fluid and filter and replace.
