You may have some chunky contaminants in your fuel tank that are blocking the supply line, screen sock, or fuel filter. The screen sock is located inside the fuel tank on the bottom of the fuel pump and filters the fuel going into the supply line for the fuel pump. Your fuel filter is typically mounted under the back seat behind the driver, but Honda tends to move things around a bit so you may want to verify that location with your local auto parts store. If you run the tank below 1/8 frequently, that tends to draw the chunks into the sock, line, and fuel filter. You may be able to just change the fuel filter and use a concentrated quality fuel Injection / system cleaner like Justice Brothers fuel injection cleaner . Avoid "cheap" cleaners - all they do is break up your money, not the contaminants in the system. Fuel injected systems run at a much higher pressure than carbureted systems, so be careful when releasing the pressure from the filter to avoid getting sprayed. If you don't have a manual, then I would suggest getting a Chiltons repair manual for the specific steps required in changing the filter - as well as the specific location, as it may also be under the vehicle in various places. Afterwards, try not to let your car get below 1/4 tank to keep this from happening in the future, and use a can of Injection cleaner about every 10th tank fill. Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

What do i need to know before changing the fuel filter

Fuel Injected Engines

The fuel filters on injected engines are a metal cylinder which is located in the rear frame rail or in the engine compartment. You may find it under the injection manifold on some models. Each model varies.

  1. Unbolt the retaining screws and remove the protective shield from the fuel filter.
  2. Place a pan under the delivery pipe to catch the dripping fuel and SLOWLY loosen the union bolt to bleed off the fuel pressure. The fuel system is under pressure. Release pressure slowly and contain spillage.

Where is fuel filter located?

On most vehicles covered by this manual, the fuel filter is located in the engine compartment, mounted to the firewall.

CAUTION Do not use conventional fuel filters, hoses or clamps when servicing fuel injection systems. They are not compatible with the injection system and could fail, causing personal injury or damage to the vehicle. Use only hoses and clamps specifically designed for fuel injection systems.

Location for fuel filter

They can be all over, anywhere between the pipe in the gas tank to the inlet at the carb or fuel injection system. In the old carb days there was usually a filter which screwed right into the carb. Nowadays most cars have an electric fuel pump in the gas tank and there is a filter/screen inside the tank and another one which can often be found above the rear axle beam, along the inside of the frame rail, attached to the firewall, or in the fuel line. Some cars have a combination fuel filter and pressure regulator.
Follow the fuel line from the tank forward or from the fuel injection system backwards and you have to find it.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 1997 s-10?

It depends on which filter you want to change. There are 2 filters, one along the frame, the drivers side
, and the other is on the motor, just before the injection system. If its carborated the fuel filter will be along the frame, if its injected it will be on top of the motor. Theres 2 clamps that hold it in on both types that hold it in. If its along the frame, it will be a steel line into a rubber hose into filter then back into steel. Ifs its injected, it will be infront or back of the injecters.

My 1984 toyota corolla ran out of gas now it wont idle

Quick explanation of your fuel system:

An automotive fuel system consists of everything between the fuel tank and the carburetor or fuel injection unit. This includes the tank itself, all the lines, one or more fuel filters, a fuel pump (mechanical, electric, or both), and the carburetor or fuel injection unit.
With the exception of the carburetor or fuel injection unit, the fuel system is quite simple in operation. Fuel is drawn or pumped from the tank through the fuel line by the fuel pump, which forces it through the fuel filter, and from there to the carburetor/injection unit where it is distributed to the cylinders.

So with that info...try first to clean your spark plugs.
Next, replace your fuel filter.
After that, depending on a carburetor/fuel injection, try an additive that cleans the injectors. For the carburetor, try a half of can of what is called "Seafoam". It comes in a metal can available everywhere, including Walmart. It is worth the $6-8 and also will "dry" out your fuel from water. Very good product.

After that, get back to us and let us know how your Toyota is running.

I have 2003 f350 super duty hickups when driving down the road

Okay, Thanks.

The diesel engine runs on air and fuel. The hick up is from air getting into the system. The injection timing is off. or the fuel injection pump is starting to go. The fuel pump in the tank should be okay because you are getting fuel up to the filter replaced in the engine. I would have the fuel injection pump pressure checked. IF the fuel pressure is good then I would check the fuel injectors and the linkage. The slightest leak in the fuel system from an o ring or filter makes all the difference in the world.

Good luck
