Question about 1992 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

I have a 1992 GMC Sonoma. I just changed the fuel pump and fuel filter and gas cap because every time I would drive it, the truck would stall would not start back up for a couple hours after sitting. However after changing all this it is now not starting at all...what could these be the cause?

well the truck started on its own...I did not touch anything just kept trying to start it...however I drove it down the road a couple miles and turned it off and it would not start again. Could this be the fuel pressure regulator?

If you can start the vehicle with carburetor cleaner, then yes you have a fuel delivery problem. To check fuel delivery, remove fuel line from fuel rail or carburetor and turn key to on. With the hose pointed into a gas can, you should see fuel pumping out of the line. If you have a camshaft driven fuel pump, then you will have to turn the starter motor to get the pump to work. If fuel is getting to this point, and the vehicle started earlier on carb cleaner, then you have clogged injectors. this may not be fuel related at all.
Check for spark by putting a plug onto one of your wires and ground the metal end of the plug . try to turn engine over. Should see a bright blue spark. Weak orange colored spark, or no spark at all indicates issues with distributor or coil. When doing spark check, be sure to have cleaned up any fuel that may have oversprayed from earlier testing.
An old trick to clear debris is to have one person cover the air intake while the engine is cranked by another person. Then quickly removing the hand that is covering the intake. 5 or 6 of those might clear out the trash.
If you have fuel, and you have spark, then timing may be a problem. get back with me and let me know what you find.

The first thing is determine if its a fuel issue or spark. when it dies, check for spark at the coil. then if thats ok, ck for spark out of dist cap to one of the spark plugs, if you have spark, then its a fuel issue. Be sure to check spark going into the dist cap and also coming out. If it doesnt come out, you may have a shorted rotor. The coil has a connector with 2 wires, ck this as the wires will break where the wires come out of the connector. with it running, gently tug at the wires, and see if it stalls or stumbles.

The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. To change the fuel pump, either the fuel tank must be removed, or the bed of the truck must be removed.
