Its the coolant temp sensor located on the lower hose neck above the transmission . you only need a pair of needle nose pliers for removing the clip that hold it in. good luck.

2000 vw beetle 2.0 L, low level coolant light...engine mil code 1256

not the pump but air in the system or a broken wire to the coolant level sensor
that sensor at the top of the radiator tank has to be completely immersed in coolant or the circuit is broken and the light comes on
same effect id the wire to that sensor is broken in the insulation

Locate your coolant overflow/fill canister. Check the coolant level and make sure it is still clean and clear. Next clean out any dirt/debris from the front grill and radiator. Finally, make sure the radiator fan and pump are working properly.

What does a P1296 trouble code on a 2001 VW jetta 2.0 L mean ?

P1296 is a cooling system malfunction. The two things that will set this DTC is a defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or the thermostat.

Replace thermostat, check engine coolant level, flushing the system first might help. Check water pump.

Had the same issue. I replaced one of the fuses in the little case on top of the engine. Check the fuse diagram in the manual, locate the one for a/c. The fuses are color coded by amps, just buy the right color and push into place. (I did this after verifying my coolant levels were normal)

2001 vw beetle engine problem

Try cleaning and retightening the gas cap. 9 time out of 10 a loose gas cap is causing the problem. The next likely problem is a bad oxygen sensor, but they are expensive.

Take your car to an AutoZone and have them hook it up to a diagnostic computer. They can detect the codes and diagnose the problem. It's FREE, and if you want to fix the problem they may have the parts as well.

When you say water light comes on, do you mean coolant level, or coolant temp or ? Check coolant level and top off if needed. Bring the Beetle to a parts store, most offer free check of check eng. light. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port (usually located under the dash) and 'read' stored engine codes in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest what to do. If you have further questions, post them here along with the code numbers.
