Motor is overheating and coolant is bubbling from radiator cap. Top radiator hose is hot and bottom is cold

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck in the closed position, not allowing the coolant to cool the engine and then go back into the bottom hose into the radiator again. You should of pulled a code on this. TB's thermostats are notorious for going bad.

When cold fill the radiator with water and leave the cap off. Make sure that you have all the air out.
Start the car and watch the radiator, you are looking for air bubbles coming out of the radiator. If you have a steady stream of bubbles appearing you have a blown head gasket.

sound like the impelled in your water pump may have failed. Or your system is air bound. Try to open the rad cap when its cold and let it run and see if air bubbles come to the top

Over heating and blowing cold air from heater


Possibly leaking head gasket. Easiest way to check would be to fill radiator full, start engine and watch coolant level in the radiator cap opening. The top radiator hose will become hot when thermostat begins to allow coolant flow through the radiator. You may have to top off the coolant. Still with the radiator cap off watch for water belching out of the radiator neck. If coolant does belch out of the radiator cap neck, refill with water. If it belches out coolant again it would be combustion gassed forcing the coolant out of the radiator.


This process should take about 1/2 hour to diagnose if it is a head gasket leaking combustion gasses into the coolant.


The radiator fan may run once car is shut off to cool engine compartment to prevent gasoline in fuel lines from vaporizing which would cause a condition called "vapor lock". A car won't start if fuel lines are vapor locked.

The water in my mazda bongo wont circulate top hose gets very hot while bottom hose stays cold , heater wasnt working but now managed to get heater working after bleeding the system but bottom hose still...


Check the radiator-it may have blockage. Take it off and turn upside down and flush from the bottom.
If the top hose gets hot, that means the thermostat is opening. The bottom hose should be at least warm, and quite warm if radiator flow is good.

2000 Linc Cont overheating. I replaced water pump, thermostat, belt & tensioner, blew through top hose out bottom (rad not clogged). Top hoses hot, bottom hose cold.


Do you have any coolant flow thru radiator with cap off?

Is thermostat in correctly?

Do a Combustion Leak Test at radiator or cap,

Why did my 320d, E46, water hose burst?


It could be due to age. Split hoses aren't uncommon.
However, it could be due to either a radiator blockage or a cylinder head problem - which is allowing exhaust gases to find their way into the cooling system via a leaking head gasket. When this happens the cooling system becomes pressurised by the exhaust gases.

To check if your radiator is blocked, run the engine until it is hot. The coolant goes into the radiator via the top hose and into the engine through the bottom hose.

Carefully feel the top and bottom hose. If the bottom hose feels much cooler than the top hose, then that indicates a radiator blockage. If the bottom hose feels 'flat' and 'squashed' that is another indicator - though it also can point to head gasket problems.

To check if there are head gasket problems, first check the oil on the dipstick. If it is a 'creamy sludge' then that indicates coolant has found its way into the lubricating system via a leaking head gasket.

Also remove the cap from the raditor expansion tank (where you fill it with coolant/water). Is there any sign of oil/sludge in the expansion tank? Another sign of head gasket problems.

With a COLD engine, remove the cap from the radiator expansion tank and then fire the engine up. Watch the coolant as the engine ticks over ... at first bubbles will appear as air in the coolant escapes. The bubbles should stop after a few moments as the engine warms. If the bubbles continue -or there is 'violent bubbling' that's teling you there is a head gasket problem.

I presume that your car hasn't been overheating or 'running rough' at times, as you haven't mentioned that. Overheating and 'running rough' can also be symptoms of head gasket problems.

All being well .. no radiator blockage or apparent head gasket problems, it is more than likely that the hose burst due to age/mileage.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

My VW Cabrio is overheating after 1-2 miles. Coolant in recovery tank is boiling by this time and making bubbling noises. Someone changed radiator hoses, flange, some housing. They are saying that radiator...



Run the engine and look at the header tank , is there lots of air bubbles coming back out of the water if is then the head gasket may have split and that is down to either a can of Radweld or a strip down repair

If the radiator is not uniformly hot them I would go for that as your problem

Normal operation is that the engine starts the thermostat is closed , engine block heats up and opens water starts to circulate around the block

So to check that you need to fill the radiator with cold water run it for a few minutes check the bottom hose it should be cold

The stat opens and the bottom hose should get hot as the water from the block is pumped into the radiator for cooling.

The radiator should get hot all over and the cooling fan should kick in when the sensor hits the over limit stop.

If that does not happen then get someone to remove the stat altogether (It is only there to get the engine block warm quickly in cold regions )

In which case the bottom hose should go from cold to warm to hot

1995 honda passport i have installed 2 thermostats and bottom radiator hose will not get hot behind thermostat hoseing is real hot and top hose is hot what is the problem


is the temp gauge getting hot as you drive the vehicle or does it remain at a constant temp? if no problem in coolant temp getting too hot (and overheating), then it should not be an issue.

you're sure radiator is filled with 50/50 mix of coolant & water to the top of the cap? if there's an air bubble trapped it could cause a problem. some cars have to be "burped" after refilling with new antifreeze.

if, however, its overheating, then i believe your radiator may be clogged preventing the coolant to flow across the radiator fins and cool properly.

try this. warm the car up (not the point of overheating, but hot enough for the t-stat to open), turn it off, make sure the electric fan is off (or unplug it is so equipped), then run your hand across the radiator. it should feel warm. if you feel cold spots, then that portion of the radiator is clogged preventing flow. new radiator is now in order.

hopefully its only a clogged radiator and not a clogged engine block.
