Question about 1997 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

I already recieved advice as to what might cause my 1997 toyota camry to be leaking oil to the point of needing a quart every day or every other day and was told possibly the piston rings were installed upside down, my question is wouldnt a mechanic notice himself installing them incorrectly? and why is it running through so much power steering fluid? it never had this problem before the engine teardown. I am suspicious that new problems arise so new bills can be racked up.

Most likely that same Toyota engine was used in a few models over a few years Before I dumped more money in it than it is worth to rebuild the engine I would find a used lower mileage toyota engine at an auto recycler and pay to have it installed. This is a toyota and should run out to at least a quarter million miles with normal maintenance. I would also make sure the used engine comes with its power steering pump and I would check the car for a steering fluid cooler, and if there is one does it have a crack in it.

Testimonial: "problem being he never offered to find a new one just proceeded to rebuild this one, think we need to dump the mechanic and the car. Thanks "

Just wish the mechanic had been more reliable, next time I believe we will go back to my husband doing all the repairs himself. He did a better job

1997 Camry. Car has a hot smell, radiator is full,

You don't say what engine you have, but almost certainly your cam cover gasket is leaking oil on the exhaust, which causes the smell. V6 engines are especially prone to this as the rear bank is tilted down. This leak is so common it would appear it should have been listed as a standard feature.

Older Camrys also leak from the distributor shaft o-ring seal.

1993 v6 toyota camry burns a quart of oil about every 70 miles at the least. Car smokes black smokes comes out of the exhaust. Car hesitates sometimes like it does not want to go when you mash on the gas....

If its burning oil the smoke will be blue, if its not blue then you have a leak somewhere, put some cardboard under your engine overnight and check it in the morning. if its leaking it might be an easy fix, but that depends on where its leading from. If your burning oil the piston rings need to be replaced, you can do it yourself with some special tools, but its best to leave that to the pros and it won't be cheap.

We have a 1997 toyota camry, my daughter has been driving it and was checking the wrong dip stick, hense the engine needed to be rebuilt due to running w/ no oil. the mechanic replaced the seals, pt head...

I would think that the shop would have seen a problem with the belt, but you never know. You might think of that when you consider the oil use, my best guess is that whom ever rebuilt the engine installed the piston rings up side down. That would make it use the oil. The power steering fluid must be leaking and could be many things but sense you just had the engine out I would look around the lines were they attach to the pump, also some times there will be some oil use after an overhaul until the piston rings seat but this seams like to much oil use for that better go have a long talk with your shop...

What is causing oil to get on plug wire on 1997 toyota camry

This is usually caused by a leak in the valve cover gasket. New gaskets is an inexpensive repair that you can possibly do yourself.

Check the coolant resovoir for traces of oil. ( usually a milky white substance.) Then pull plugs to determine which cylinder it is. You may find oil on the plugs. If none of these techniques help you determine whats the cause, your gonna have to do a compression test, cylinder leak down test as well as an injector balance test .

Transmission Fluid leak (1997) Toyota camry XLE V6

There are a few places it could be leaking from, first it could be a cooling line leaking, secound if its got a detent cable it could leak from there, third it could be leaking from dip stick tube, forth oil pan could have a hole in it or gasget is leaking, fith front pump seal or rear seal could be leaking. Everything can be fixed with trans. in car except front seal witch requires trans to come out.

For a V6 # Liter engine, you will use a galon and almost half (that is about 6 Liters of oil). I use a Toyota camry V6 3 Liter engine that shares the same engine with the Toyota 4Runner.
