Question about 1999 Dodge Ram
If that is a 318 or 360 V8 check the small hose from water pump to the intake manifold they had a habit of developing a leak and it can spray over towards the alternator.
it is a short L shape hose from water pump to intake manifold.
Also check heater hose under the alternator for leaks or cracks.

Follow these steps and it will help. But nothing is as good as a Video. YouTube would help at that. Drain the radiator by twisting the drain plug at the base of the radiator in a counterclockwise direction with a wrench until the radiator fluid begins to exit from the center of the plug. Tighten the plug back into the radiator after the radiator is drained.
Remove the four bolts from the center of the fan blades with a wrench then pull the blades off of the water pump.
Disconnect the intake manifold hose, the heater hose and the lower radiator hose from the water pump. The intake manifold hose is located on the right side of the top of the water pump. The heater hose is just to the left of the intake manifold hose, and the lower radiator hose is located at the bottom of the water pump. Each of the three hoses attaches to the water pump with a band clamp. Loosen the screw on each band clamp with a flat head screwdriver then pull the hoses off of the water pump.
Disconnect the alternator brackets from the water pump. The alternator uses an upper and lower bracket, each of which is secured to the water pump with a single bolt. The opposite end of each bracket holds the alternator in place with a bolt. Loosen the bolts which hold the alternator to the upper and lower brackets, then rotate the alternator towards the engine to slacken the alternator belt. Pull the belt off of the front of the alternator, then remove the bolts which hold the upper and lower brackets to the water pump with a wrench.
Remove the bolts which secure the water pump to the front of the engine then pull the pump off of the engine.
Smear gasket sealer over both sides of the replacement water pump gasket then push one side of the gasket onto the back of the water pump. Position the water pump onto the front of the engine then install each of the water pump's retaining bolts with a wrench.
Position the upper and lower alternator brackets against the water pump, then install the brackets' retaining bolts through each bracket and into the water pump with a wrench.
Place the alternator's belt into the groove of the alternator's pulley then pull the alternator away from the engine to tighten the belt. Tighten the bolt which secures the bottom of the alternator to the lower alternator bracket with a wrench.
Position the fan blades onto the tip of the water pump then install each of the four fan blade bolts with a wrench.
Slide the intake manifold, heater and radiator hoses onto the water pump, then tighten each hose clamp with a flat head screwdriver.
Remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze, then install the radiator cap.

The water pump in your 2003 Chevy Cavalier circulates engine coolant from the radiator into the engine, where it absorbs damaging heat from the combustion process. The coolant is then pushed, by the water pump, into the radiator, where the heat it has absorbed is released into the air. When the water pump fails, overheating and severe engine damage can occur. The most common symptom of a worn water pump is a telltale leak from a small hole, called a weep hole, near the water pump shaft.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using an 8mm wrench and lay it aside. Place a drain pan under the driver-side front of the Cavalier and open the drain valve located on the bottom of the radiator. Remove the radiator cap from the coolant reservoir and allow the coolant to drain into the drain pan.
Remove the serpentine belt, using a belt removal tool positioned on the tensioner pulley bolt to rotate the tensioner clockwise while sliding the belt off the alternator pulley. Disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator by pushing the release tab and then pulling the connector from the back of the alternator. Remove the two 13mm alternator bolts, located in the front of the alternator bracket, using a 13mm socket and ratchet. Add an extension to the socket and ratchet and remove the rear 13mm alternator bolt located below the alternator bracket reinforcing rib on the back of the alternator. Slip the alternator from the bracket and lay it aside.
Remove the 10mm water pump pulley bolts using a 10mm wrench. Remove the 8mm water pump mounting bolts using a socket, extension and ratchet. Use a screwdriver to pry the water pump from the front of the motor. Clean the gasket surface on the engine using a gasket scraper until all traces of the gasket are gone.
Attach the new gasket to the new water pump using gasket adhesive and install the new pump into the front of the engine. The gasket on the water pump in the Cavalier can be a little tricky to place, but it will only go on one way. Torque the water pump bolts to 18ft-lbs. using a torque wrench.
Reinstall the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts securely. Reinstall the alternator and serpentine belt. Retighten the water pump pulley one final time with the belt installed to prevent loosening caused by vibration.
Close the drain valve on the bottom of the radiator and fill the engine with a 50/50 mix of fresh coolant. Remove the bleed valve on the top of the thermostat housing to vent air from the system. Reinstall the bleed valve when coolant starts to escape. Start the engine and add coolant to the engine as it is drawn from the coolant reservoir. Fill the reservoir to the full level on the reservoir, and reinstall the radiator cap., Hope this helps & please don't forget to rate me, Kind Regards from Paul across the pond.
