Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action please have the transmission fluid replaced. If it's burnt, the transmission doesn't perform well unlike with new fluid it shifts faster and smoother.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

My best advice to you is to ask the dealer to have a GM factory filed service engineer come out and look into this problem, it is under warranty so if you fool with this you will void the warranty, make GM fix the issue or explain why they can't. This advice comes from 35 years as a Factory Trained dealer technician, this includes 10 years with GM model lines

electric or manual shift? have had to replace the switch panel on a fair number of those trucks. NAPA stocks the part.

Automatic transmission will only shift manually

This is a sensor issue. It can be from a couple of different sensors. The VSS, or vehicle speed sensor is the main one. Loose or faulty wiring can cause it, a faulty PCM can cause it, or the Throttle Position Sensor can cause it.

Engine speed hunts on idle. Auto trans slow shift.

The fast idle valve is inside the throttle body. Sometimes it backs out and needs turned back in (it's threaded). This will cause the loping idle.

Get transmission filter changed with new fluid. Honda does not recommend transmission flushing.

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

Shifting into 4wheel drive

btwn 2H and 4H can be done while driving up to 55 mph.
btwn 4L and 4H must stop put into Neutral in automatic trans. - do not stop at N on 4WD shifter. One solid motion.

i had the same problem after spending $500.00 for toyota to look at it they didnt fix it and suggested i it was the auto trans and i should get it overhauled costing thousands. i didnt believe them and started to do some of my own research into the problem. the coolant temp sensor at the rear of the intake manifold tells the ecu when the engine is at correct operating temp then allows the auto trans shift into overdrive. to rule out any problems with the auto trans i disconnected the plug to the temp sensor and went for a drive when the engine was cold and it shifted straight away into overdrive no problems. you can't leave this disconnected because the engine is hard to start when cold as the temp sensor also tells the ecu that it is cold and allows the cold start injector to inject more fuel into the engine on cold start up.to overcome this i cut the wire to the sensor plug and installed a switch which i installed into the centre console.now i start the car flick the swith use overdrive then swith back to normal after car has warmed up . engine fault light appers on dash when switched on but doesnt matter. i have had this modification for 2 years now no problems.
