Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

We're trying to start the car and the alarm goes off instead. Mechanic a couple weeks ago said that the battery was too low. Problem now is how to get the alarm to stop so that we can boost the car and it will actually start.

Remove the battery, charge it up, refit it, lock then unlock the car either by using the remote fob or key in drivers door, car should then be fine.

Sounds like the immobilizer is activated? Disconnect the battery for an hour and then reconnect it. It _should_ reset the alarm.

Mechanics changing a battery try to do it quickly, the ECM thinks someone is boosting the car. What they should do is use a couple of lengths of wire to keep the power to the car the whole time of swapping over the battery. That way power remains in the alarm system and immobilizer at all times.

Car is "dead" but battery/alternator/starter are all in working order. Hornet is causing this.

Engine starts, but won't stay started unless I step on the gas.

It sounds like to me your mechanic recommened you change your timing belt and water pump due to a maintance issue. If vehicle still runs good with old timing belt new belt wont change running. Cold weather and low cranking amps (poor battery) will cause starting problems.
