1987 Volvo 240 DL wagon temp gauge will rise and drop frequently, doesn't overheat. I'm replacing the thermostat, is there something else I should consider?

This condition can be the thermostat or a leak in the system that causes air to enter. I suggest a T-stat and a new radiator cap as both can cause this.

Volvo 1984 StnWagon Dl turns over but dies when taking off the ga

NO Diesel engines dont have spark plugs so dont worry about it as the ones you have should be ok BUT first check the length of the plug thread to the ones you took out, are they the same as they have to be the correct length and not any diffreance also the earth tip on the end
If they look the same 100% your ok to go. RON

My 86 240 dl started clacking, then smoking going 60 on the highway, pulled over, let it cool down, now it wont start.

It sounds as if the car needs an overhaul, I think the motor got damaged - the gasket blew, then the pistons seized..... What happens when you put water in the radiator, does it "go missing"? Does the engine oil look milky?
