If you can't glue the handle back on, e.g. with urethane glue (gorilla glue, Elmers Nano, etc.; use as directed, cleaning lever and plastic cover with soap and water just before gluing) then you can just buy a part like Nissan 84640-9E000 (1998 Altima exact replacement; Nissan call it a Handle- Trunk & Gas Door Release.)

That will work fine as long as the gas filler door mechanism isn't messed up; go check for obstructions once you open the door, presumably by using a small locking pliers over a cloth or some rubber on the lever (or the cable wire.)

The trick is, you get to replace it with the door open; use a blade screwdriver to pry the running-board trim up, unscrew the bolt on the trim to the left and pry that off, undo some expander bolts holding the carpet across the running-board area, and wrangle the carpet away from the lever you want to replace.  Some 10mm wrench work gets the lever loose, and you tilt the loosened stuff forwards to be able to remove the cable.  Regrease the bolts and cable run as well as you can.  Thread the new handle through the carpet before you bolt it in; it's harder to set up and bolt, but you don't have to cut the carpet or remove the seat!

If you don't want to shell out the $20 or so for a new lever then pull a "Fonzi" on the gas tank door - hinged side. Use the side of your fist to hit the door (on the left side) and it should open after one of two hits. This is a much better alternative to prying the door open which can chip the paint.

I have the same problem, I have removed the handle and pulled the carpet away from the door guard and pull the cable with my hand. It does not take alot of pressure to release the handle. I am going to tie a piece of small rope (shoe lace thick) to the cable.

Well mine is starting to do the same thing. the trunk pops open not the lever for the gas to open door. The handle on the lever seems to sliding off tried to reslide it in and still nothing. I guess I will have to take to mechanic.

Until you can get the release handle fixed, push a credit card into the gap next to the right (rear) side of the gas tank door until the mechanism releases. Simple.

The gas gauge on my 2001 Nissan Altima shows full when filled up, but only tets to 1/2 full when it is near empty. Suggestions?

Either the fuel tank sender in the tank is bad and needs replacement, or the fuel gauge is faulty. I would bet the one in the tank is probably bad, because that's usually the case. Find the connection at the fuel tank, disconnect it and use a VOM to get a resistance reading while the tank is empty and reading 1/2. It should match the specs.

I can not find my fuel tank lever any where in my 2002 altima

Did try to lift the rear seat and found a tank? On top of that fuel tank is a circular cover with 2 wires and terminal, and bolts.
That's the fuel level assembly, it is inside the tank.

Hope that helps!

2001 nissan altima with a stuck gas cap door. Lever in front ''seems'' to be working. But mechanism is not releasing. Best way to manually open it.

Open the trunk and behind the trim cover near the gas door only on the inside there is a cable pull there also. the owners manual will show you where it is it you have it.

Where is my fuel filter 2001 nissan altima

Most of the time there is an inlet screen/filter in fuel tank attached to fuel pump. But there should be another filter between tank and fuel rail. it should be located on the firewall, so if you work backward from an injector toward the gas tank you will bump right in to the filter along the way.

Gas tank over flows when filling up

There is a tube that run down into the tank inside the fill pipe, it vents air as the tank is filled, if it is blocked your problem occurs, most likely it is kinked.
