Question about 1989 Ford F 350

1 Answer

I have a 1989 international truck w/ 7.3 litre diesel. Same engine as in 1989 ford f-350 diesel. Trouble starting. I replaced glow plugs and glow plug controller / relay. Still problem starting do not want to use starting fluid. Question 1. i have fuel line leaking by injector. Could this be a fuel pressure problem? 2. At what temperature outside do I need to use block heater? I would appreciate advice.

You answered your own question with # 1
the fuel leak is doing opposite when starting it is sucking
air . i had the same problem on mine,
it also let the fuel drain back to the tank that then
takes forever to reprime itself
hope this helps

You should never use starter fluid when the glow plugs are hooked up. It can cause severe engine damage. You probably need to replace all the glow plugs and the glow plug controller.

Have a load test done on the batter to check for failing cells. For diesels to start any thing less than a fully charged battery good battery is a waste of time as the engine needs fast RPM to heat the air to ignite the fuel and slow rpm's just doesn't cut it.

Glow plugs

glow plug wire harness under valve covers often deteriorates causing no glow plug heating. The connectors and wire terminals are available from Ford as a kit or individually. Do not replace the harness. $600!
Still need the fuse panel circuit? Look in owner manual.
glow plugs use a relay too.

2004 diesel hard to start when cold

It sounds more like the glow plugs, the older models had trouble out of the module, but the 6.0 is pretty safe from all those problems. And don't forget to use the correct fuel additive for diesel engines, it helps .
