Bleeding the clutch


2 people job. one presses down on the clutch pedal while the other opens the bleed screw. then closes of the bleed screw before the pedal operator lets the pedal up . The process is repeated until all the air is out . Watch the fluid level in the reservoir.

HOW TO BLEED THE CLUTCH


Same procedure as bleeding brakes. Two people needed, One pumping the clutch pedal 5 times and hold, other person open bleed screw , letting air out ,then close. Repeat procedure several times until pedal has good resistance and steady stream of fluid runs clear. If pedal does not come up after bleed screw is opened, pull pedal up by hand and continue with bleed procedure.

I recommend bleeding the clutch using instructions pasted from autozone.com below. As for the engine light, please get the computer scanned and send us the diagnostic trouble code.
Hydraulic System Bleeding NOTE
It is necessary to bleed the clutch hydraulic release system if the system has lost an excessive amount of fluid and has allowed air into the circuit. Air in the system typically results in a spongy pedal feel, and/or improper clutch release. If air cannot be removed from the system using this procedure, it is necessary to replace both the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder assemblies.

Except Turbocharged Models
  1. From driver's seat, actuate clutch pedal 60-100 times. Verify clutch operation/pedal feel. If pedal still feels spongy, or clutch does not fully disengage, excessive air is still trapped within the system. Perform the following procedure:
  2. Verify fluid level in clutch master cylinder reservoir. Top off with DOT 3 brake fluid as necessary.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove clutch slave cylinder assembly from the transaxle case, but do not disconnect from the system. Allow the slave cylinder hang, making it the lowest part of the system.
    CAUTION
    While slave cylinder is detached from the transaxle, DO NOT actuate the clutch master cylinder. Damage to the slave cylinder will result.
  5. Depress slave cylinder pushrod until it bottoms and then release. Repeat this at least ten times, forcing trapped air upwards and out of the system.
  6. Re-install slave cylinder into position. Torque slave cylinder to case bolt to 168 inch lbs. (19 Nm).
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  8. Check and adjust clutch master cylinder fluid level. Actuate clutch pedal thirty (30) times. Verify clutch operation/pedal feel. If pedal still feels spongy, or clutch does not fully disengage, air is still trapped within the system. Repeat Step 3 through Step 7 until air is purged. If several attempts at purging air from the system are unsuccessful, replace both the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder assemblies.
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  11. Top off clutch master cylinder fluid level with DOT 3 brake fluid as necessary.
Turbocharged Models

NOTE
Due to the angle and design of the turbo hydraulic system components, gravity and pedal bleeding are less effective and less efficient than the reverse fluid injection method (reverse bleeding). Reverse bleeding is recommended for this system, and requires the use of commercially available injection bleeding equipment.

Alternate Procedure (Pedal Bleeding)
  1. Remove reservoir cap and inspect fluid level. Top off with DOT 3 Brake Fluid. Actuate clutch pedal briskly at least 50 times. Verify release system function. Repeat. If release system is still inoperative, continue with procedure.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove clutch bellhousing access cap to expose system bleed screw.
    WARNING
    Use care not to allow fluid to drain into clutch bellhousing. Excessive fluid will be agitated and sprayed around inside the clutch bellhousing by the rotating flywheel, contaminating the flywheel, disc, and pressure plate, resulting in poor clutch engagement.
  4. Using suitable socket/wrench, loosen bleed screw. Immediately install rubber hose to bleed screw to prevent fluid from entering clutch bellhousing. Tighten bleed screw gently with suitable wrench.
  5. Lower vehicle.
  6. Have helper actuate clutch pedal to floor.
  7. Place collection container at end of hose to capture expelled fluid.
  8. Using suitable wrench, break bleeder screw loose and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Do not over-tighten.
  9. Have helper release pedal, returning it to at-rest position, and then actuate pedal to floor.
  10. Break bleeder screw loose and tighten to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Do not over-tighten.
  11. Repeat procedure as necessary, keeping master cylinder reservoir full during the process, until air bubbles are no longer visible in collection container.
  12. When air bubbles are no longer visible, actuate clutch pedal briskly at least 50 times.
  13. Verify release system function and top off fluid as necessary.
Recommended Procedure (Reverse Bleeding)
  1. Remove reservoir cap and inspect fluid level. Top off with DOT 3 Brake Fluid. Actuate clutch pedal briskly at least 50 times. Verify release system function. Repeat. If release system is still inoperative, continue with procedure.
  2. Remove reservoir from bracket and empty into collection container.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove clutch bellhousing access cap to expose system bleed screw.
    CAUTION
    Use care not to allow fluid to drain into clutch bellhousing. Excessive fluid will be agitated and sprayed around inside the clutch bellhousing by the rotating flywheel, contaminating the flywheel, disc, and pressure plate, resulting in poor clutch engagement.
  5. Using suitable socket/wrench, loosen bleed screw.

  6. Quickly attach hand operated bleed apparatus to bleed screw. Use care not to over-fill reservoir and spill fluid into engine compartment.
  7. Operate bleed gun sufficiently to expel air upward through circuit and out of master cylinder reservoir. Fill and empty reservoir three times.
  8. Remove bleed apparatus and tighten bleed screw to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm). Do not over-tighten.
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10. Top off reservoir with fluid, then return the cap.
  11. Verify system operation. Actuate clutch pedal 50 times. If necessary, repeat procedure until road test confirms that shift issues no longer exist.

The clutch pedal went to the floor


Either the master clutch cylinder or the clutch slave cylinder is gone.Check the level of the clutch fluid.Try filing it up with hydraulic fluid and pumping the pedal it to see where the leak is from.

Can't get clutch to bleed on 1996 s 10 we have bleed bleed and bleed


Hi if you have done the following to bleed the clutch.
1 open bleed screw
2 push pedal to floor and keep on floor
3 do bleed screw up
4 lift pedal
5 undo bleed screw
6 push pedal to floor
7 do bleed screw up
8 lift pedal up
you need to repeat this a few times but making sure the fluid level dont drop below the lowest level else you will get air in the system.

right now if you have done the above properly and you still either get the pedal going to the floor and staying their or you have no pedal at all then this points to their being a fault with either the clutch master cylinder or clutch slave cylinder, now in most cases the one that fails is the master cylinder this is the one that is connected to the clutch pedal now its usually this one that fails and causes the pedal to go to the floor or have no clutch.

but it could also be the slave so bare this in mind, if the pedal comes back up after pushing it down then the chances are its the slave at fault and this is the one on the gearbox that operates the clutch arm.

Installed new clutch. Having hard time bleeding system.


favourite trick of mine is use assistant to pump up clutch then hold it down ,open bleed nipple on slave and with a bar lever clutch arm right in then repeat a couple of time this normally does it ,if still a problem then hold clutch pedal down with a brick or a broom handle and leave overnight

I need to replace my slave cylinder


The part is not expensive and is fairly simple to install.
You are also going to want to purchase some brake fluid as this is what your clutch master cylinder uses. You may already know or have some.

The slave cylider is located on the transmission and is attached to the pivot arm. Or pushes on the pivot arm rather, and has a tube coming out of it that goes to your clutch master cylinder.
Now that you have located the part you will notice there is a bleed valve on it. You will need to turn this and bleed the fluid into a container by slowly pushing the clutch. Once bled remove the bolts that mount your slave cylinder and disconnect the hose to remove it.
Install the new one in reverse order as the way you removed the old. Connect hose, mount the bolts with the plunger in the pivot arm, and close the bleed valve and grab your fluid to start the bleed.
You now have to bleed it which is pretty much running fluid through it to remove air from the line. If you have a hose to connect to the bleed valve this will be easier, or get a friend.
Assuming you have a hose that fits your bleed valve, pour some fluid in the clutch master cylinder reservoir located under the hood (that is empty since you drained it.)
Now take the fluid bottle and submerge the hose into it. Loosen the bleed valve to open it and pump the clutch pedal slowly, you may need to use your hand as the pedal may collapse forward which means you will have to pull it back and pump it forth.
Give it a few pumps and check the reservoir, if it is almost depleted then you will need to replenish it. Give a few more pumps to the pedal and push it in till it stays all the way forward where it stays. Now tighten the bleed valve and THEN release the clutch. Push on the pedal with your hand to check it, do you feel resistance? Repeat this until the pedal resistance is normal (with the bleed valve closed)

Remember you never want to let the clutch fluid get low to where the fluid is gone and you hear sucking/gurgling coming from the reservoir, as this is air going through the system.

How do I bleed the clutch slave cylinder on a 1993 Dodge Dakota Sport 2wd?


should be self bleeding if pedal is set correct

pedal rod needs 1/8" free play to clutch master clydinder plunger

fill clutch res slowly let bubbles bleed

then only half strokes on the clutch pedal with 30sec pause between pumps
