Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Open Question

Gear shifter problem. Transmission seems fine...I can't get the gear shift to shift back into park or reverse. It will shift from neutral thru the low gears( but its like something has either wore out or has broken, because it will slide over gear positions), but will not back into reverse or park. I took the pannel off of the top of the steering wheel, and I noticed that when it is in neutral (neutral on the instrument pannel and tranmisson in neutral), its actually in what should be the park position/grove on steering wheel column. Its like something with the gear shift its self has broken or shifted in there, and sliped to the right 2 gear positions. Any ideas?

SOURCE: my transmission wont shift out of low gear and my power steering light stays on

just remove whatever you did to cause the problem... it probably messed with the electrical system and is interfering with the other things

SOURCE: 1986 Chevy truck stuck in neutral on column

is there any resistance at all when you shift gears. sounds like the linkage is broken... perhaps right at the transmission itself.... should be an easy fix as i would guess the clip holding the linkage on has failed.
other option is that the transmission has failed.

is that an automatic or standard tranny ?

SOURCE: my gear shifter is in

It's a linkage adjustment on the bottom of the vehicle, or the pointer has broken loose from the steering column collar under the steering wheel.

You can sometimes crawl underneath the vehicle to figure out what needs to be adjusted if the problem is down there.

At the transmission. About half round, usually 2 of 3/8" or 7/16" short bolts holding it on if I remember correctly. You'll see wire harness going into it.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

Gear shifter won't shift into reverse or park

When you "muscled it into neural" you broke the shifter. Most likely it will take a replacement shifter to repair.

For car not changing gears and not shifting out of park mode ,it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

Car stops moving in reverse gear

Sounds like the car is just slipping out of gear. Keep your hand on the shifter when you back up next time. See if you can feel the shifter move when the car comes out of gear. If the shifter moves up when it happens keep pressure on the shifter holding it back like you dont want it to move forward. And of course if the shifter moves back when it comes out of gear, put forward pressure on the shifter so it doesnt slip out. This might work for now but but i know i wouldnt want to spen 700 for that ****. Let me know how it goes.
